G'day

Maybe Ive had too much coffee today, maybe Im just crazy, but have you considered implementing a system of 'Dakka Dakka Acheivements' (in the vein of the virtual rewards for PS3 Trophies and 360 Acheivements)?

My thoughts are that these could be tied to stats that are easy to track - number of posts, number of photo's uploaded etc.

These virtual rewards could then be used to encourage certain activities or behaviours - ie voting in the gallery (300 votes for a bronze trophy!), commenting in the gallery, number of posts, partook in a competition etc. You could also include ones that are not stat based (but these would require some form of manual intervention by a mod - possibly requring a prompt from the user) - for example - posted pic of completed squad. And you could look at sponsored achievements - Painted a Privateer Press model for example.

Of course, there are dangers: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2286

Anyway, caffeine has worn off, so I'll finish up.
Thanks for your time.

I have indeed thought about it. I've seen it tried on a few sites, including one I frequent. While it is a cool idea in principle, it wont be implemented here for a few reasons:
1. Very few people actively participate, and those that do are usually already the most active members.
2. They are usually done to encourage people to do things that they would not normally do for fun. This makes the site suck a bit in the long run / mental image for them, and prevents us from working around the sucky things to make them naturally more fun.
3. There is quite a bit of overhead involved in tracking achievements, both in terms of development and server time.
4. People who just want achievements next to their name will game the system. For example, voting, they might just vote 0/0 on 300 images and reduce the overall quality of the gallery as a result.

We see enough abuse from people posting just to increase their post count for a higher rank. If achievements went across the broad spectrum of things you could do on dakka, it would be a lot more moderator overhead. Even if achievements were manually applied by moderators to users, there would be significant additional overhead for the moderators to check and process it all.

So on the whole, while it is a fun idea, it is not something that would improve the site and so wont be implemented.
