It's because its typically the colours GW uses for the eavy Metal army, plus its the colours used in a lot of the art.

However a quick glance around will reveal that many do not follow that path.

Cus black is cool and purple goes well with it. I suspect tho that it's the same reason why most lizardmen are blue, some people follow the "when in doubdt do what GW did" painting plan.

Edit: Those gold and red ones are awesome

I think a larger percentage do as well.

I'm confidant in saying Black and purple really does suit the army mind, so that probably helps in peoples decesions. Although saying that, people do try to mix it up as well, by adding other colours into the black, purple mix, or going for extreme shades of the colours, so not to look too much like the GW versions.

There is some danged fine variation out there if you look for it.

I also always viewed it as adhering to the color patterns of Slaanesh. Most Slaanesh related armies seen to be represented with purple and black.

Black and purple are the official colours, also founded in the background material. This is because Dark Elves are inspired by D&D Dark Elves/Drow with the same traditional colours (but obsidian instead of pale skin).
