My friend and I were discussing future codex publication schedule.

Our best guess after Necrons and Sisters this year is:

2012: 6th Edition, Traitor Legions, White Dwarf Choas Marines update, Black Templars, Tau

and then in 2013 perhaps... Orks and Eldar.

We thought it'd be unlikely that 2013 wouldn't see some kind of Imperial release. Other than Dark Angels though, all the Marine codexes are still fairly recent. That got us thinking maybe they'd come up with something new. Why not a Codex: Ultramarines?

It seems SO obvious that we're both wondering why it's never been done, considering the popularity of the Ultramarines chapter. Any ideas?

Two things... There was one in 2nd Edition and what do you think Codex: Space Marines is?

I'm unsure if you are trolling or not...

Codex: Ultramarines existed in second edition.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Yea, if you've ever looked through the SM codex I think you'd realize aside from the 6 or so HQs that are not part of the Ultramarines, everything in the codex is Ultramarine...

They wanted a standard codex to be flexible. you have the options of making it Ultramarines or the option of making your own chapter.

IMO this is better rather then simply making it ultramarines. plus it makes sense because if I rem correctly Ultramarines had the most chapters splinter off from it. so it fits that you can make custom chapters from that book.

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

Ah, I didn't look back far enough in publishing history I guess.

Nah, I'm an Ork player, I've never read through the vanilla marine codex. Didn't realize it was already an Ultramarine codex by proxy.

Guess the cover wasn't obvious enough?

Well, it's a codex for Codex Chapters, and they are the posterboys of Codex chapters.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

They are the living Codex SM. Except that time Sicarius rammed a thunderhawk through a waterfall.

In that case then why haven't GW made codexes for all chapters? All chapters have their own charachteristics. But they do go on about alll this stuff saying pretty much that "Ultramarines are the best chapter. They kick butt so Salamanders, suck it! (Oh, and answering my own question: because Mat ward can't be bothered.)

Because most chapters don't really deviate from the Codex Astartes. The way it was handled, a special character or two that alters combat tactics and/or unit selection, is a perfectly acceptable way to represent them. Then there's the fact that the Ultramarines are the progenitors of half of the chapters operational today, and that percentage keeps growing.

Pretty much what Omegus said.
The different codeci were made to represent different organisational differences.(Bit odd i thought but hey go with it)

Because nobody likes the ultrasmurfs, they are spoiled and basically they already have a codex... Codex: Space Marines

I don't get how that's quite so amazing. The base Marine Codex covers the Codex Astartes with slight variations due to HQ choices. Is it odd that this Codex then covers perhaps the most adherent Chapter?

Because you helped me out... I will take back what I said, besides I shouldn't bash a fellow space marine chapter.
