Vallejo is probably the best recommendation, though I believe you'll need a palette for it.

Yeah, they are really good for blending, so a palette would be helpful if you were into that kind of thing.

Also since your friend England, try wayland games for your Vallejo paints, great prices!

Also, Vallejo offers great additives, that GW just doesn't have. Thinners, drying retarders and glaze mediums all help you, to get the most out of your paints.

+1 for Vellejo
Just started using them, never used anything else but Citadel until now.
Coverage is excellent, drying time appears to be slower, so if you do a one off mix, it doesn't go solid on your palette before you've done with it, and I even quite like the smell!
(Also had a much better shade of purple for my DE than GW do)

I really like the wayland site. Its considerably cheaper than the others. the wargames site i was thinking of using charges 2.75 a pot but they only charge 1.50. It looks as if they are a european based company. is that way its cheaper. or will i pay the difference in shiping?

I use Model Master (Testors) Acrylic paint along with GW paints for my 40k figures. I mostly use MM for scale military models and find they are almost as forgiving as Humbrol Enamel but without the smell, clean up with chemicals and toxic liquids.
-edit- Also note I only brush paint.
But they don't don't match the specific color ranges of GW as well as Vellejo.

I've been using Tamiya Color acrylic paints in addition to Games Workshop, Reaper, and Game Color. Out of all of these, Reaper is my favorite brand. I'm surprised it doesn't get more love within the Warhammer community. I love paint in dropper bottles.
Tamiya Color is the cheapest brand of acrylic model paint my local all-purposes hobby shop carries. It runs around $2.30 USD for a 10 ml bottle, and I've been plenty happy with it thus far.

I find Tamiya acrylics to be very difficult to use if you have to apply more then one layer or work with a large surface. When brushing the previous layer is easily stripped away. It is however a very good choice for airbrushing.
