A new 40k player at the local gaming store is complaining about the fact that he can't paint his models like the one in the codex (they are still very good for a newbie tho) post the most terrible paintjobs you've ever seen to cheer him up.

So you take the pee out of some poor anonymous ten year old's efforts to cheer up someone who has little self confidence

Tell him I think my work is crap cos it ain't up to heavy metal standards as well.
But I keep plugging away and he should do same.

Are the GW models in the codex supposed to be the best around? The GW painters are crap compared to say the old studio painters for Confrontation.

In this community it is considered bad form to say" hey that's a terrible paintjob you did there".

It's one thing if you are laughing at some "pro" painted models on ebay that are clearly NOT pro painted.

My first models were laughable. 11 years later and I'm quite proud of what I can do when I actually put effort into a model. Practice practice practice.

Everyone starts off kind of bad, it becomes even more clear if you compare it to work done at a more professional level. The key is to simply practice and not ignore any constructive criticism (ie. not "your work is gak, go die in a fire", but helpful tips so they may improve if they want to) that may be handed out.

As for me I never think my work is good, the second I do I'll likely find something better and realise that it's not or I will simply stop trying to improve as much.

That's what i said to him, and his models are good, the problem is that he keeps to compare his work to the golden deamon winners.

I'd like to point out that most GD winners are better than GW painters.

Tell him to look at them as inspiration, not competition. A Golden Daemon paintjob should be his goal to work towards.

Getting there takes time and practice.

Absolutely
Also GD winners generally are not meant for the table top
How long does an individual figure take to get to that standard.
Hope the guy doesn't have a horde army!

I think most people in this hobby are probably average painters, table-top quality painters. And I certainly fall below that. There are some good painters and a few very good painters, you only have to look at the Dakka Dakka gallery for that. But I use those well painted models for inspiration, certainly not to compete against.

Personally my goal is to become average, or maybe just above average, I'm certainly not aiming at Golden Demon. I try for simple but tidy and to enjoy the game.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

As the other posters above have suggested, there are other ways to encourage people that don't involve making fun of other people's work.
