My current lamp gets extremely hot and it only has a 28w bulb in it, when I'm painting the heat coming off it actually gives me a headache sometimes. I'm basically looking for a good lamp in the £20 - 25 price range that will be suitable for this hobby, and preferably one that doesn't get so insanely hot.

Lamps get hot because bulbs get hot (incandescent and CFLs, at least - LEDs are pretty much the only things that stay cool), so replacing the whole shebang won't help if you plop the new lamp right next to your face, as well. I use a full-spectrum daylight bulb in a cheap-o gooseneck desk lamp. The light is fantastic, but it does get hot. It sits right next to my face, so I get hot. I haven't found a way to get the same quality of light without that, though, so I simply deal with it. Somehow affixing a pair of them over my shoulders would be fantastic, but it's simply not practical.

The point is this - don't go buying new lamps until you've considered a few potential arrangements, as a change of bulb and position might serve you better. Another cheap-o lamp, for example, would let you light from both sides, allowing you to move them out of your face, a bit. I know there are some fancy combo magnifiers and ring-lights for modelers, but 98% of us don't need more than a good bulb in one or two lamps.

TLDR: Move the lamp away from your face. If it's not bright enough, get a brighter bulb, then a second lamp, if necessary.

Yeah, the reason I have to have it so close is because it's so weak. I will buy a brighter bulb on Monday and see if that does the trick.

Don't forget to never put bulb with a higher wattage then the lamp is rated for or you risk having a fire hazard.

On another note I second the daylight bulb, it's the old fashion kind and tinted blue. I use a 60 watt daylight bulb and I only need to have it sitting over my head with no need for it to be near my face.

-edit- Oh, and if your lamp is only rated for 28 watts, then you may want to upgrade to a (cheap) goose-neck lamp that takes a more powerful bulb.

I've been researching this for the past hour or so and here's what I've found out, the bulb I currently have is an Incandescent Bulb which produces far more heat than a CFL bulb and is far less efficient at doing its job. With a max 40w lamp I can use either a 40w Incandescent Bulb or a 40w CFL, but the 40w CFL would be the equivalent of a 200w Incandescent Bulb. The only problem is the actual size of the bulbs, but a 20w CFL (which is the max I can find) should fit, and it's the equivalent of a 100w Incandescent bulb. So there you have it, it is possible to have more light with less heat. I will be picking up a replacement bulb on Monday.
