Heya, relatively new to the background of the space marine side of 40k and looking for some general do's and don'ts with chaos. I'm going to play out of the Space Wolf codex for my Thousand Sons, because it feels like I can pick any unit and just throw them into a list (as opposed to carefully balancing things and getting stuck with a static list). I'd like to just build the army based on what units and models look cool and I want to paint - but I also want to make sure I don't make a chaos champion with some power sledge and have someone get in my grill about it being against canon. They look like a simple Counts As, because I can follow WYSIWYG with all my units (not using those metal models).

Whats a list of things I should be cautious of with this Counts As? So far I'm thinking Drop Pods, and Assault Cannons, and Whirlwinds...

Example of what I was thinking of:
Njal (Greater Sorcerer, with a flock of ravens - sweet)
Rune Priest (Sorcerer, rocking a staff )
Wolf Lord (Chaos Lord)
Wolves (Chaos hounds, would like Horrors but it might be much of a stretch)
Wolf Guard (Aspiring Champions)
Lone Wolf (Champion halfway to being a spawn)
Scouts (Cultists)
And all the basic troops, dreads, etc that are completely similar

I cant see using bloodclaws, just because I don't know what they would be in a Tzeentch army.

Oh the irony. Using a Space Wolf codex to represent the Thousand Sons.
But with that being said, I think the GK codex would be better for Thousand Sons.

Oh, why is that? I looked at the GK codex and thought they had some cool things, but at first glance it felt like SWs had more chaosy customization with their gear and upgrades. Everyone being a Psyker is a plus for GKs, and they are pretty elite. The main thing I had an issue with was that they are moving towards a lot of close combat aren't they? Is it justifiable for everyone in a chaos army to have a power weapon?

Everyone being a Psyker is the main reason the GK codex would work better

Yeah, I'd be leaning more towards Grey Knights as Thousand Sons.

The focus on Psykers and the idea of their Elite status (reflecting the fact that there weren't all that many Thousand Sons in comparison to other Legions).

Oh, wait. Hang on a second. Are we talking pre- or post-Heresy Thousand sons, here?

It wuld work for both IMO.
SW doesn't work as well but it could be done. The Scouts would not make good cultists methinks...

I thought TS were immune to this since they're all dust? Unless we're talking about other tzeentch warriors teaming up

I agree that GK work better. Heck use Inquisitors or Coteaz and you can field human statline cultists

Space Wolves are Anti-psykers... and mortal enemies to the 1k Sons. I can't see too many players out there buying into this at all. I have no problem with Salamanders counts as Wolves, but 1k sons is like Necron counts as Tyranids to me (just worse).

I can't even fabricate a worse counts as in the 40k universe, fluff wise.

We have a local player that fields a straight Tzeentch army and he does very very well (undefeated in solo games, notice my one Ultramarine loss down in my sig?). Its an easy wounding all 4++ save or better army that puts some serious hurt on.

Try your base codex before hunting down "counts as"

What's next, a Word Bearers counts as Ultramarines?!
