Hey all,

I've been experimenting with some preshading today and wanted to ask for some advice. I cleaned my model and primed it with grey primer, being careful to lay down thin and even coats. After that, I preshaded the model with black in the recesses and white on the high spots and then used thin coats of Vallejo Falcon Turquoise to build the color up.

But then the paint started to crackle a bit, leaving small "fissures" all over the open areas. I think I can save the model by weathering and adding some chipping in the end, but I have no idea what happened. Any suggestions, what I might have done wrong?

Cheers,

It looks like it's actually a flaw in the model, to tell you the truth.
It's too irregular to make me immediately think "paint cracking". If it were paint cracking, it would be all over the model not just in those two spots.

Damn, and I thought I got all the faults when I was cleaning the model. Oh well, you live and learn. Maybe I can salvage some of it.

Funny thing is, I couldn't see anything wrong when I was priming. It was only noticeable, after I brushed the Turquoise on.

I think the flaws are actually kinda nice. They make it look distinguished and well-used.

I agree, sometimes the models don't always come out perfect. In fact one of my old models the arm had a whole chunk missing. But I also agree with Kanluwen in the fact that it makes the model look a little better.

It could also be that the primer was not completely dry before you started airbrushing onto it, in which case your thinner (even water) could react with it.

That I can eliminate - between priming and starting the paintjob there were at least 8-12 days.

After reexamining the model I have to agree with Kanluwen. The flaws where there, only to tiny to notice before I added some contrast with the colors. I'll finish it up in the next few days and then I'll post a picture how I tried to incorporate the flaws into the weathering.
