I decided to start a Grey Knights army recently, and for the 1st time decided on a slow and steady approach... Basically, buy 1 squad at a time, finish painting, then buy another one.

As for my 1st question, it pertains to modeling, and WYSIWYG. If I model say a Dreadknight, and model it with the Daemonhammer, but somehow also add the greatsword to say his back, can I legally use either weapon in a tournament, since it is physicality on the model?

Second question, how did I do on my 1st paintjob in years, and my 1st time ever using washes? (Pics should be below).

They aren't the best quality pics, but it's the best I can do on short notice.

I basecoated them with a mettalic silver paint, I think they turned out pretty well. I did some outlining and contrast work in Shining Gold, and painted the blades of the weapons with Litch Purple. I lined the edges of the blades with a 2:1 ratio of Shining Gold and Litch Purple.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You really need to paint them in more distinct colors. They have a base color, a trim, and no accent or weapon colors. Make the handles of their weapons black or a deep red to offset the fairly boring metallics. Paint the fields of their shoulderpads white, red, or any color you can think of that isn't metallic. What washes are you using? I see a little shading on the silver, but none on the gold, whether that's the photo's fault or not I have no clue. Use a Gryphonne Sepia wash on the gold parts, it'll make them look very rich.

So to break things down into something more coherent than my ramblings, here's what I would do:
- Wash the model more thoroughly. I think I can see shading, but wash the whole thing with Badab Black so you can get some depth in the recesses. Wash the gold with Sepia!
- Paint the weapon casings an accent color. Paint the stormbolter box and the weapon handle a dark red or black or something so there's something that stands out about them.
- Paint your bases. From what I can tell that's just bare sand and the base rim matches your armor color. Make your base rim a dark or muted color, such as black or a brown like Graveyard Earth. Paint the basing grit one color, then drybrush one or two layers of highlights over it. For example, paint it Adeptus Battlegrey, drybrush Codex Grey then Fortress Grey over it.
- Drill the barrels of your stormbolters - having the gun barrels drilled out adds a healthy dose of realism to your fantasy plastic spacemen!

Sorry if this is a lot, but I'm trying to be critical while giving some good advice. Hope this helps!

I JUST noticed that SRM's avatar has pink fingernails... epic.

That's actually a girl off-screen reaching for Duke's package, but yeah, I've seen the confusion before!

I apologize, I guess I hadn't mentioned that this is a work in progress, not completed. There is in fact a decent contrast with the wash I used, I blame that on the horrible pics my phone takes. This is my 1st time painting in over 2 years, so I'm a little rusty still. I plan on painting the guns red with black and gold magazines, and gold accents. I have no idea really what to do with the bases, I know I need to paint black then layer a few browns overtop. I have some flock for grass, but I think I need to start looking into other things I can do with bases in the future.
