Subject: shooting: is max range based on target unit or target model?

Hi, n00b here...the book discusses how models in the shooting unit that are out of range cannot fire. But what about models in the target unit that are out of range? Say a target 25 model unit only has the first rank of 5 within my max range. Can I still hit the remaining 20 models?

Yes. You shoot the unit, not the models.

If only the 1st rank of the target in in Max Range, I would think that you only have 1 rank to fire with.
for a Sniper shot, you have to be in range of the target model.

Not true, you take range from each rank you fire with. As long as they are in range of even a single model they are in range of the entire unit, and can fire at the unit.
for a Sniper shot, you have to be in range of the target model.
Agreed.

The way I understand it is that range is measured unit-wise not model-wise. So if part of your unit is in range with part of the target unit then of your models (taking other restrictions into account) can hit and potential kill all models in the target unit.
I also agree about the Sniper issue

As a follow-up question: What if half a unit is within short range but the other half isn't?

Same as you do any other time you have multiple modifiers / to hit values: you roll them seperately.
The half of the total shooting models in long range are on a -1 to hit.

Right.. but based on the question.. Only one rank is in range. He only had one rank that could fire. If the 2nd rank could fire, he would mostly have have 2 ranks in range assuming if they was the same base size.

Its measured model-wise.. If my unit of Night Goblins Bowz are shooting in 2 ranks at a Dwarf unit that 18" more to the upper right of the front arch. I may only get 9 of the 20 NG in my shot.
