I've been working on building my own rough riders. (pictures will be up soon) But i have encountered a snag. What base should be used?
The GW models in their images are on old school cavalry bases, the fantasy kind, but the FW models are shown on large infantry bases, AND most of the images here i have seen use biker bases.
Is there a standard base size I should be using?

Bike bases look the best and most fitting i think.

The only Rough Riders GW are selling are the horrible Attilans. They come on the old caverlary bases. Forgeworld uses 40mm round bases for the Krieg cavalery, which is something I plan do to with my Rough Riders (and the planned Chaos Marine cavalery ) as well.

40mm rounds are okay, I find them a bit wide however, Bike bases "rank" up better... if you know what I mean.

Bike bases or 40mm round are both fine, it's a matter of personal taste which looks better. Personally I think squared bases look off in WH40k. If it was me I'd go for 40mm.

So, its mostly aesthetics? Am i likely to run into any complaints rules wise? last think i want is to work my butt off making a model then have people tell me "oh, that's illegal, you cant use that" at a tournament... After all they're rough riders, and no one should be complaining if I use them anyways as it means less vendettas.

That's the main problem. If you're going for "completly tourney legal" you'd have to go with the ugly fantasy cavalery bases that come with the Atilans.

I think.

If you need them, I have a number of square//round bases. send me a message.

I reccomend the round, because everything in 40k is round. Sometimes works to your advantage, sometimes against (base-to-base contact is easier to achieve)

Why not just get some of these http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470008a&prodId=prod1570010?
I don't see how anyone could say they were not tourney legal. They are the same thing that spacemarine bikers would be using, from GW, and are an appropriate size. The 40mm rounds don't really make sense to me, a waste of space.
