So, I've finally decided to buckle down and get a fantasy army going. After reading over pretty much every single fantasy codex, the army that stuck out to me was Orcs and Goblins. My biggest fear however, is that I'll invest a whole bunch of money into an army (Which unfortunately is also a horde army), and it will turn out to be a weak army. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for an easy "I WIN" army. I'm willing to invest my time into learning to play them as best as possible. I just don't want to gimp myself either.

So I guess my question is, how good are orcs and goblins? Can they stand up against the elites?

Orcs and Goblins can be an amazing force, but you really do have to practice at it. I have played alot of WHFB armys (ogres,HE,DE,WOC,SKaven,Beastmen, a large number of fan made books and OnG) and I have found OnG have one of the biggest learning curves but once you get it down you will be getting a large number of wins under your belt.

In comparison, how are Beastmen?
They were my 1st runners up.

Beastmen iirc are in terrible shape this edition. Over priced units across the board. Not sure on their tactics though.

Yah I'm getting into Beastmen and they seem to be either cookie cutter or badly off. Orcs N Gobs are great you just have to practice a bit.

I think I'll stick with the greenskins. I prefer their fluff and style anyways. Any advice on where to get some good insight on them? Or perhaps some gems you yourself would like to share with me?

This is some general ideas, personal experience, my ideas and how I like to play and i'll give you some tips -

1. Pure Orc OR Pure Goblin lists are viable.
2. I like to field either Savage Orc Big'Uns or Black Orcs, not a mix of them both. Having both gets pretty expensive in points. I prefer Savage Orc Big'Uns. They are amazing - A3, S5 first round of combat, WS4 and if you get a Savage Orc Shaman and buy a Shrunken Head (and you really should) you get a +5 Ward Save. While Black Orcs are somewhat good they are expensive. They get Armed to da Teef rule though (they can decide between Great Weapon, Additional Hand Weapon or 1H + Shield if you buy it (1 point only.)) Problem is that Heavy Armour won't do much because there are so many units who are able to crush that armour. Do you remember that +5 Ward Save for Savage Orcs? Yeah, that can't be ignored by high S weapons/units.
3. Night Goblins are good and cheap. I like to field them as Archers. You can also include Netters and Fanatics.
4. Orc and Goblin heroes are cheap (really cheap!) and you can include lots and lots of them in a single unit. That'll make 'em dead killy.
5. Some will say Boar Boyz are terrible but I usually disagree. With +3 Armour Save (with shields) and S5 on the charge (with spears) they will deal massive amount of damage. Just add a Banner of Swiftness and they have M8.
6. Wolf Riders are good as well and much cheaper. They don't hit as hard but they're fast - really fast. And you can get them Short Bows really cheap.

Feel free to ask any question and/or PM me for more.

Beasts are cool. A lot of people down them but they were made for 8th. With leadership rerolls from the BSB for Primay Fury/Hatred for every round of combat not just the first like regular hatred. There are only a few competitive builds mostly Minobus and Herdstone/Shaman Spam, but our models look damn good. A battalion managed to avoid the recent price increases. And all are units are pretty awesome even ungor.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Orcs are a really fun army. Characters are stupidly cheap. Muppas said that Boar Boyz are good, for reasons. I don't like them because they are too expensive to grind down units like they do after the charge. A unit with 40 bodies is about the same points as a unit with 15 bodies. I'm not discrediting what Muppas said, it's just that Boar Boyz can't quickly kill units, and then have a hard time grinding them down after the first round.

Black Orcs are good, if you take Grimgor Ironhide as your general. He is a killing machine. Pretty much better than every other special character in the book.

The way I've had success is by taking large hordes of boyz. Nothing but boyz, a unit of Black Orcs with Grimgor, a few cheap characters, and the obligatory Lv4 Orc Shaman. My body count is around 170 in 2500, all orcs and a single goblin.

Im a fan of the blackest night OnG list (night goblin core Blorc special) and this is what I run normally. But then again OnG rare choices are numerous and a blast to play!

I love black orcs in mine i run 40 in a horde form with grimgor in the front, ws 5 black orcs with hatred is scary, and with choppa rule an GW 30 S7 attacks!

also make good use of da little waagh too, goblin shamans are cheap as dirt to get level twos and majority of the little waa spells are helpful augments, while the big waagh has some character snipping with some silly greenskin shinanigans lol

also a pointer is your troops are cheeeeaaappp, the more the marrier lol instead of worrying about keeping each guy alive just look at it as theres always another orc

Cheers

Are there any models you will never hit the table without? For example, I watched a Youtube battle report where his Arachnarok was his MVP.

The beauty with O'n'G is that there's no must-have-unit. Sure, everyone prefers some different models. I prefer to always run at least two units of Orc Boyz but if I want to I can pick something else and do just as good. So really it's all about what you prefer and how you want to field your army.

I remember watching that battle report myself and I didn't like his setup - HOWEVER, it's very viable. As I said earlier it's all about what you like and how you prefer to fight your battles.

Oh I absolutely agree.

I want to hear what everyone's favorite unit to field is though and why that is.

I hear mangler squigs are popular despite the lack of an available model.

Personally I like the concept of "purist" armies, so all orcs or all goblins.

For the few pieces of artillery I just use orc models under the same rules as the goblin crew.

Savage Orc Big'Uns.

WS4, A3, S4 (S5 first round of combat), not too expensive point wise but not dirt cheap either. Around 450 points for 40 of those bad guys with full FC. They are truly devastating and I always laugh when someone thinks they will be easy to beat and send in some expensive units at them. But it should also be noted that I ALWAYS add a Savage Shaman with Shrunken Head for that juicy +5 Ward. Even though i'm not a big fan of Savage Orcs models (I usually prefer clothes and armour!) I just cannot say no to those stats!

But I sure do love those Night Goblins as well, equipped with Short Bows and Netters. They are so good at flanking and annoying the opponent!
