Hey Guys,
I'm looking to get some varnish to do my IG infantry (there will just be way to many to paint the normal way)
Can anyone suggest hardware store alternatives for the Quickshade light, medium and dark tones?
Just trying to see if they're cheaper than Army Painter.

I've heard the brand 'Miniwax' referred to several times. I believe you may have to use thinners though to make it suitable for miniatures though.
I'd suggest just biting the bullet and going for Quickshade personally. You know it'll work, it's tried and tested, it's easily accessible, you don't need thinners and although a tin may be expensive, it'll last you forever.

Have you looked into Minwax? I've never dipped myself, but I read, that it's a viable Quickshade alternative.
Cheers,

Ah thanks, yes I do recall Miniwax was the brand that I'm looking for.
Does anyone know what corresponds to the Army Painter tones?
Their varnishes are names "walnut" and such, so I'm not sure what the lightest tone is similar to the soft tone from Army Painter.

I have used both and I will be honest and say that if you can get the Army Painter stuff. The Minwax is more dangerous than the Quickshade. Quickshade is made with models in mind and therefore safer. Quickshade never gave me a headache but Minwax did. I was not a fan of the Minwax, but that's just my opinion.

I've only used Minwax, but I'm very pleased with the results. I apply it with a brush and sometimes thin it just a touch if I want it to run a bit more.
Minwax comparables won't be exactly the same , but it's darn close. YMMV, but don't be afraid of Minwax. Gamers have been using it to dip miniatures for over a decade before Quickshade was "invented".
Quickshade color: Nearest Minwax equivalent
Soft tone: Pecan
Strong Tone: Antique Walnut
Dark Tone: Tudor
