Subject: different colour schemes in one space marine chapter
|

I am thinking of making a chapter with actually no uniform color scheme. And i am wondering if this will work. Here is the basic background:
The idea is basically just to use models from different sources, painted in different schemes and field it in one army. So i can use previously painted squads or even try out different color schemes in one army.
The fluff is pretty simple, a lot of different stragglers and survivors from mayor campaign and ofcourse different chapters forming a new chapter. Not really a successor chapter but a raged bunch of homeless space marines. The fight must go on. (if this army comes to life, fluff will be more specific and detailed, this is just the concept.
I would put Dark angel stlye robes on almost every marine (i guess i will have to model most of it from green stuff). Robes and bases will provide the sort of uniformed look and theme for the army. But the marines won't repaint they armor. If you wan't to know who you are, remember where you came from.
I intend to make the equipment worn out. Also evidence of multiple field repairs on all equipment is a must. No drop pods, land raiders or anything that needs a lot of technical support. Most of the army will be just troopers.
So guys, what do you think. Will it work?
Any other ideas how to get that uniforming one army look with all the different colors?

All the equipment will be worn out and repaired in any convenient manner.

Death Watch has all black armor except for their right arm which is silver and one of their shoulder pads which retains the chapter markings and color of their origins.

From a fluff angle probably not well. Space Marines tend not to leave survivors.
If you were going to try and make up background for this I'd sooner go with a large campaign where multiple chapters have come together to fight a common enemy. Like the battle for Armageddon for example.
Alternatively, go with something a little less extreme and just choose a couple different colors and use fiction similar to the dark angels where the inner circle wear X, deathwing wear Y, and ravenwing wear Z.

sort of. but also mixed chapters within same squads.
And just wondering. Is that kind of army legal for tournaments?

I've seen Death Watch painted armies in tournaments.

Deathwatch are all black with different shoulderpads though.
This would be red marine and green marine in the same squad...
No idea if a tounrament would allow it, probably would be my guess.

hmm, good point. So if my chapter is just picking up stragglers (or even deserters) and going on their own, they are not really adhering to codex astartes. Which i guess makes them sort of... chaotic. Or at least renegade.
I wasn't thinking exactly about a crusading army but a leftover of it, on some emperorforsaken system, with no communication (probably chaos warp or something similar). So they being space marines they will not give up the fight.

I would not have a problem with it, as long as they are all WYSIWYG.
Basically you could say there was a huge war on a planet with many different chapters, and only one Imperial cruiser survived in space, and on the way back to the core, they had an emergency distress call on a nearby planet and the Inquisitor/whoever was in charge on the ship told them to assemble into squads and prepare for battle.

So long as you pick a single codex for ther rules, there is absolutley no problem with this. You're sort of just winding up with a Loyalist version of the Red Corsairs.
I like the idea of putting them in robes. Having that to unify the army will help make them look a lot more cohesive, while still leaving you the freedom to go nuts with the armour.

My marines had two different colour schemes, and no one complained about that (although I did get complaints about their size ).
Then again, that was part of their chapter fluff...
Either way, no one's going to get mad at you for using different colours. So long as everything's WYSIWYG and consistant, no one has any right to complain.
