Hey all.
I have decided to collect a lizardmen army.
Its not to play with but to have a cool showcase army.

I would like to get some nice ideas for a cool army ( including terrain tips)

thanks!

Edit: colour shemes are also welcome!

I'm not sure wether that is a sword... it's more like a letteropener, really.

I would do searches on here, coolminiornot.com, and check out the 2 lizardmen websites (pyramidvault & lustria-online).

Is there any sort of theme youre thinking of? When you imagine them what sort of environment & color is there?

I would paint models within the same unit different colors. For some reason I think it would look cooler that way rather than the standard of having every model green, or blue, or whatever.

edit: I also have some OOP plastic Sauruses and Skinks if you like the older plastics.

Pretty much all their models look sweet man just go with the flow, but there is a fairly rigid tournament list so choose carefully if your a comp player

For a showcase army just buy any model you like the look of.
For a jungle theme skinks and beasties work well and pet store plastic vegetation is golden. Altho some sort of jungle tribe or patrol can easily include saurus, maybe mounted on those sweet DE cold ones (or if you have a LOOOT of spare money the finecast ones).

Well then get a batallion for a nice spread of low model count units and then buy any other stuff you feel like having.

In the 6th ed Lizardman Codex, GW suggested looking at books on real world reptiles for inspiration.

My original plans for my 6th ed Lizardman army would be the bulk would be from the main pyramid city of Mictlan (from the Mayan, "Place of the Dead") and spawns from that city were a brilliant emerald green. Mictlan controlled a tributary town called Itzpec (from the Nahuatl, "Obsidian Hill"), so called since the obsidian for the temple armies would be quarried there. Troops from that town would be a bright orange with black armor plates/spines to look like hardened black lava floating on molten lava. It was a great looking effect but a pain to paint! The troops from Itzpec were mountain or fire related, so my army's Salamanders and Terradons came from there, as well as one 20 fig Saurus unit.

@OP: I don't know if you've any interest in the fan variant of GW's Mordheim called Cities of Gold which is set in the New World and lets you play a Lizardman warband, but I did, so the terrain I was planning was going to be dual use. Much planned but only a marsh was completed. The other stuff I wanted were Skink barrios (which would be patterned after the adobe buildings of the Pueblo Indians as opposed to Aztec or Mayan), marble-lined spawning pools, a small ruined shrine, and an altar. Wanted a pyramid, but had no place to put it. There would have been jungle made from palm trees I found at a hobby store, but that's just generic, not really Lizard-specific. There is just something about the Lizardmen which makes me want to model their world, which is not true of the other WHFB armies I own.

I did my old lizardmen army as a desert theme.

You're welcome. It's mainly an example of developing an army theme which can then help in creating the paint scheme.

Speaking of terrain: Irrational Number Line Games Idea of the Week is one making a Aztec/Mayan temple out of foam. It's modular so you can set it up in a variety of ways. "Indy, throw me the idol, and I'll throw you the whip!"

@aerethan: Did you darkprime or whiteprime your lizards?

Primed white for those because of the colors involved.

If I were to paint lizards I would probably go with an Blue Skin (like a blue belly) and then Orange Scales, those 2 colors really complement each other really well something like this:

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Thanks. So how did bring out the scales? Dark brown wash followed by highlighting?

The recipe for them is:
prime white
base skin with khemri brown, scales with dheneb stone
wash all with devlan mud
highlight skin with dheneb stone, scales with bleached bone
touch up metal with black, and then Reaper Dragon Gold(best dark gold out there)
Then wash the whole thing with Gryphonne Sepia, and the metal with devlan mud.

One unit of Skins are painted Green with slightly darker green scales.
One unit of Saurus are painted brown with dark brown scales.

For my Slaan, it's going to be black and yellow like a poison dart frog.
