To sum up:

The guy who created the Storm Trooper helm sells some from his original molds from the set, Lucas unleashed the (legal) hounds, man fights it in court and wins.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Seems he essentially got lucky. Works of Art are protected in UK law for 15 years.

Anyone know if this would have any influence on Chapterhouse?

Doubtful, Chapterhouse is based in the US where copyright law is pretty strong. If CH were in the UK, then maybe.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Works of art are protected for author's life plus 70 years in the UK and the USA.

Copyright law is pretty similar, though not identical, between the two countries.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Oh. Must have misread it. Sure it says Copyright law is 15 years in Blighty for Works of Art?

That's not necessarily the case.

He didn't "create" the Storm Trooper helm design. He's responsible, however, for the actual creation of them based off Lucas and McQuarrie's work.

Which means he created the design.

When you take inspiration from another design you still create the design being inspired.

Kan, why are you trying to fight this?

The highest court in the land has decided against you.

Lucas' lawyers are also on record as having stated that this man designed the helmets.

Well UK propmakers are now screwed when it comes to working on big blockbuster pictures which are typically American.

The little guy won but it might be bittersweet in the big picture and FWIW doesn't seem like it'd work in the USA.

Wouldn't this just mean the contracts would change, not that no one would ever use a UK propmaster again?

Given the technical basis for the ruling, Ahtman is correct.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Ah good point. Or they could skip it and go American, the legal forces aren't strong with them for that
