Subject: Good primer spray without spending $20?

Hey guys!
I'm looking at getting some models primed and ready for painting; my Legion of Everblight army requires certain models primed in white, and others in black; thing is, I have no black primer. Anyone have any good products they recommend for priming that I could pick up at Canadian Tire?

I'd recommend just getting Gray Primer. Vallejo makes a really good one, and it'll allow you to take the same steps as you'd be taking on the white/black models.

Home depot has a can of flat black that is 0.97 cents.
I only use that. Its the cheapest can in the spray paint ailse. Shake it well. And Do the light spray / don't hold it down heavy. It is very thin, but if you don't shake it well and go with the heavy spray its probably going to clump.
It comes in flat white & flat black.

I also use the cheap spray paints in flat black or white (ColorPlace sprays from Walmart cost a buck each - can't beat that price! - I'm sure you could find a reasonably inexpensive alternative in Canada). They aren't a true primer, of course, but I haven't found anything stronger to be necessary, especially after a few coats of paint and varnish. They go on thin and smooth, if applied properly (which hasn't proven difficult, in the least), and the matte finish has enough tooth for subsequent painting.
Some people swear by automotive primers, but of the few I've tried, all went on too thick and left a rough texture visible through thinned paint. Without being able to sand every surface before painting, it wasn't worth the improved adhesion, to me. Clean your models before "priming" and plain old spray paint should do the trick. Just be sure to test any new product on scrap before taking it to your precious models.

A few folks swear by the cheap $1 sprays, but I haven't found them to work effectively as a primer, not enough tooth for the paint to stick to even after thoroughly cleaning your models. That said, most of the models I'm painting are pre-owned and have been stripped, which could change it's effectiveness.
I use Krylon light grey auto primer and have found it superior to just about everything else. It's only $3/can and does go on a little thick, but shrinks to conform to detail as long as it's not over applied.
Rule #1: use what works for you. It's not necessary to spend an arm and a leg on primer.

Personally I'm a big fan of Krylon Fusion Ultra-flat black. I get it at crummy-tire for about $7.00 at the can.
Tons of models painted, never had an issue personally.

Brilliant, thanks guys!
I was wondering about the Krylon paints.... I might try those. Though the $1 cans DO intrigue me...

+1 for $1 cans from Wal-Mart. Before switching to airbrush primers I used ColorPlace and they worked just fine(both white and black).

I strongly advise against the cans from Wal-Mart. Some people have great success with them, but I've had nothing but utter trash.

How interesting. Is this the Wal-Mart generic stuff, or Krylon purchased there? I have had some issues in the past with the former, as in the primer rubbing off fairly easy during painting, but rarely. With the Krylon purchased there, I've not had problems at all. Typically, though, if you have a bad can of spraypaint in a store (this goes for about any retailer) it is best to not shop at that store at all for a few months. Return the can for a refund and buy your spraypaint elsewhere for awhile, even if it means spending a little more. Quite often, when a can is bad, the whole shipment, or at least that entire box, is also bad. Wait a couple months for the stock to be replenished and try again.

Krylon.
I bought one can at Wal-Mart, then it fethed up a Chimera. I waited a month and picked up three cans from different shops around town. They did the same.
Just feth using Krylon. I'll pay for Vallejo. At least that stuff strips easy too.

Krylon Krylon Krylon. Too perfect. Never had any problems with it. Or even cheaper and just use the cheap 98 cent cans of spray paint.

I use the Army Painter spray primer, i've never had a problem with it, which in my opinon makes it well worth the money.

I'm not talking about Krylon sprays. ColorPlace is the Wal Mart brand of spray for $1.
If you want truly perfect priming, use an airbrush and Vallejo Model Air Gray Primer.
