Alright guys Im beginning a Thousand Sons force. Its going to be very fluffy and what not. So far these are the units I am using. Everything is converted to be 1k Sons but I need some help on tactics for later when I expand. I also need to keep in mind what will work for the Thousand Sons when Legions will come out so I have to keep that in mind. This is what I own currently for my Thousand Sons:

- 2 Winged Daemon Princes - Mark of Tzeentch
- Ahriman
- Chaos Sorcerer w/ force Axe
- 4 squads of 9 Thousand Sons with Sorcerers
- 3 Rhinos
- 5 Thousand Sons Terminators
- 1 Landraider

Clearly my anti-tank needs help. I do plan on getting a Defiler the first time I have the oppurtunity. The question is what should I expand this really fluff army next to make it somewhat competitive? Remember I am trying to keep it really 1k Sons themed so Obliterators are a no go. I do like Predators a lot for my anti-tank but they can be expensive point-wise. Also I have been thinking about Vindicators as well but Im not sure if 1k sons will have it when Legions comes around because I kinda see that being more of an Iron Warriors thing. I think Vindys might be a better choice in the long run because I do see Thousand Sons as a devensive type army considering how slow they move.

I will also definitely be getting pink horrors and the Greater Daemon of Tzeentch from forge-world eventually. But right now I need suggestions on my anti-tank and what I currently own. So please leave me some feedback!

Really? Can't remember if there were any in the 'A Thousand Sons' book or not - you would think there would be a few. No reason why you shouldn't have some for the purpose of game though - as you can give Termies the MoT (I know that doesn't mean they have to be 1k Sons but..) and I've seen some players convert termies into Thousand sons and they look prety good.

There most certainly are 1k sons Terminators, the 2nd Chapter Approved book has an article on the different cult terminators. It somewhat contradicts with Codex CSM 3.5 in the fact however it states they were also souless in their armour, where the codex states they did not get the rubric. One note though what youve outlined now would not be legitimate per you have 3 HQs. I'd recommend Dreadnoughts for AT though as well as any Heavy support other than Obliterators and Havocs if you are wanting to stay fluffy

Alright. And yes there is such a thing as Thousand Sons Terminators. Don't know where I saw it but I know for a fact there is.

I have thought about Dreads but Im not going to pick one up yet considering Im getting all the forge-world stuff for this army so its getting pricey already when it comes to me buying tanks and such. What about Preds? And what about Vindys? I see Vindys more of a Iron Warrior thing but I dont know if a Thousand Son force would have access to Vindys as they do so with Predators. I will be picking up a Thousand Sons Drread soon off Forgeworld its just a matter of time considering all my tanks already have the FW doors and stuff on them already.

My Thousand Sons termies are played as Choas Termies just with the mark of Tzeentch.

I wouldn't see any reason the 1k sons would not have access to vindicators they were a pre heresy design so all legions should have had access to them. As far as would they use them that's really up for debate. The index astartes article on them is quite lacking other that they loved using sorcery. Outside of that I'd say they were pretty standard. I personally think itd kind of be cool to model havocs as just more sorcerers and treat them as such depending on what weapons you give them.

I was the same way. Thats really one of the main reasons I ask is because Im trying to play them close to fluff as best as I can while keeping them semi-competitive still.

I have a 1k sons army and while it is a very small army, it can take a beating. It's not as tough as a Death Guard army, but it does get saves against all types of weapon (except Ctan based weaponry.

It is rubbish in cc, very good at taking out MEQ, but has major issues vs IG, Ork and Nids.

I dont know anything about whether there are 1ksons termies or not. But i do know that your Hq allowance is 2 and you appear to have three. drop a daemon prince but keep Ahriman

He handled that earlier, he was just posting everything he has, I said the same thing though. I think as long as you put in some predators or anything with multiple shots like heavy bolter dreads you would do better at being well rounded say against nids and orks etc..

He split with his own warband after magnus raged at him, he took all the sorcerers that cast (and survived) the rubric with him. They took roughly 1/3rd of the legion at that point if i remember.


they are the most active part of the thousand sons since magnus has the rest sitting on the planet of sorcerers they last fought in the battle of the fang if i remember correctly they took heavy losses.

Ahriman is Exiled still he is pretty much tending to his own agenda and trying to hunt down the Black Library. Other than
Ahrimans warband I have not heard of anything involving the Thousand Sons after the heresy.

personal preference ive heard good things about obliteraters since they have a heavy flamer if i recall and makes them a swiss army knife which works well with 1k sons general power armour killing specialty.


Also about ahriman hes in the BL book atlas infernal where a inquisitor dressed as a harlequin gets the atlas which is a map of the webway and then gets chased by the thousand sons and the harlequins so TBH its a insta buy for me since i love both the thousand sons and eldar.

Thousand Sons haven't been a successful army ever since the new Codex without going to other units that are "warband" style units. It's possible to build Thousand Sons list but they are very watered down and have lost their pureness. Pyshers that have no pyschic defense?!? BAH!

I really do hope that if their is a Chaos Legions codex the Thousand Sons psychic abilities will be top notch in the game. Not really GK like but something that can easily rival them in the Psychic portion of the game. For crying out loud thats waht Thousand Sons are known for in the first place!

"Justus I know! It's Chaos right?" The warp is Chaos, yes! One more question class! Who has among the worst and most pathetic psykers in the game? "Tell us teacher!" Chaos, once again.

No psychic defense, very mediocre spells save Lash and Warptime depending on RaI vs RaW.

Just going to chime in on tactics/unit selection: I used to have thousand sons, switched them off once 5th edition came out. Frankly they have a very limited use, so your army will never be as good as one built around plague marines - but there's no reason you can't win, just don't expect to do well against all comers if you play against lots of competitive armies.

Daemon princes w/mark of tzeentch, bolts of change

thousand sons squads with rhinos w/combimeltas

Auto/las predators or possessed vindicators

Should make a pretty good army. I'd try the squad sorcerers out with doombolt first, switch to wind of chaos or bolt of change depending on if you have trouble with assaults or vehicles.

Things which could also be taken are ahriman, just chucking out gift of chaos and bolt of change, or a squad of terminators in a land raider. MoT for termies is pretty good, so they're an ok heavy assault squad.

Imperial Guard: 4000 pts

Corregidor 700 pts
