Hey!

Intereested in the BT, now the thing is I'd like to know how well they fare to collect, and play.

Despite being 4th Ed. are they still worthy enough to play in casual/semi-competitive games?

If so, does that require spamming, im not an advocate for spamming...



How are they to collect? they fun to paint etc.?


Also how many unique units do they get? and do they look cool and play up to their fluff?





FINALLY, are they an expensive army to play? If I played them, i'd be getting those chapter upgrade things!

They're a really good looking army, and their upgrade kit is boss, even if it doesn't quite compare to the Space Wolves/Blood Angels boxes. the problem is this makes building the army significantly more expensive.

The army is actually pretty decent to play, even if it isn't near the top of the competitive pile. Hell, Templars won a semi local 46 player tournament here. You just need to use the right units; assault Terminators with lightning claws and furious charge with an attached chaplain in a Land Raider Crusader makes a hell of a deathstar; something Templars are very good at.

As for unique units, they have the Emperor's Champion, a mandatory character who is pretty tough, and Crusader Squads. These mix scouts and Marines into big squads of up to 20 men. They don't get sergeants, but they have wargear upgrades that can be bought throughout the squad.

Templars can also put Power of the Machine Spirit on any vehicle, including Vindicators, which makes for a resilient armored force. It's just a matter of finding what works best for the army.

Be advised that conventional wisdom on the most competitive Templar build is a gunline; the recent FAQ makes them an ironically good shooty force, if done correctly, while the rise of Blood Angels, and even Grey Knights and Space Wolves, means their close combat potential ain't so hot anymore, even with Accept Any Challenge. That said, Black Templar Assault Terminators are still probably the most lethal variety of Terminator out there.

I see, well, they really appeal to me my first ever models where a combat squad of Black Templars painted by my dad the night before my 5th birthday

Also i'll be playing them with their pre-order kit in Space Marine this september haha!

You need the FAQs but it isn't as expensive as you would think. I'll throw out a couple links to help you.

These will be your basic initiates. They are robed bodies and are around $8.50 cheaper then your basic space marine counter parts. Next you will need weapons for your marines.

This will come with 5 bolt pistols/close combat weapons

Finally you will need shoulder pads for your guys. If you dont want to spend another $10 on shoulder pads just file down the ones that come with the dark angels set. It doesn't take very long.

This comes to a total of $37 for 5 guys. As space marines go that is pretty expensive. But to actuallly make sense you need to realize how much you saved. First you would need a the upgrade pack $30 then lets go with the 5 man box of marines for another $25.

The upgrade sprue for black templars only comes with 6 torsos so you will need one for every 6 guys f you want to do it the right way. So it cost $55 if you are going upgrade sprues with tactical marines or $37 if you go with the direction i showed.



Personally i go with the Dark angel upgrades sprue/other stuff for my basic initiates and i go with the combat squad and black templar upgrade pack for my sword bretheren and HQ choices.


One other thing you will need is tons of scouts with close combat weapons.

Yeah I wouldn't be using the upgrade sprues completely on 5-6 guys, i'd be spreading it out like my brother does with his BA (Death company sprues spread out over most of his army, shoulder pad here, Blood angely chest there etc)

Lastly I dont play competitively, just friendlies, and very lukewarm competitive lol

Sword bretheren are basic trops with some specal ability like furious charge and such. Do not the the elite verson of sword bretheren. If you do take them in a command squad for a marshal and attach a chaplin with a rull servitor retinue. The Terminator honors is useless on anything besides marshal and chaplins. Black templars are one of those armies that if you are going to do them you should do them the right way the first time, so make sure you go out of your way to get enough close combat weapons from the start because bolters are the worst thing to have in the black templar army.

I would recommend you start with a

Space Marine Battle Force
Make 3 Melta gun Guys
Make 2 Guys with Power Fist
Run every other guy with close combat weapons
Give 1 Jump Guy a powerfist and stormshield
Give 2 Jump guys Plasma Pistols and Stormshield
Give the other 2 chainswords and stormshields
Give the Scouts boltpistol/CCW
Give the rhino a storm Bolter

Get 2 Upgrade packs.

Get Command Squad
Make an apothocary
Make Company Champion
Make Standard
Make Powerfist
Make metagun

Get the emperor's champion

Get High marshal

Get Land Raider Crusader

Get the gramaldis model.

The way this army works
The land raider crusader unit is your hammer unit. They will do the killing and the dying. The high marshal and grimaldis will have a minimum of 8 attacks each on the charge with s5 the other basic dudes will have 5+ attacks each

The big initiate/neophite unit will be for taking the opponents objective/get kill points on their side of the board. Take saves on Neophites when you want to advance or take them on initiates when you dont want to move anywhere

The small rhino unit will be a suicide unit to take out a tank or it will be used to secure yoru objective.

The Jump guys sole purpose in life is to off tanks or tie up your opponents big death unit. They will have a 3+ Invulve so the will be able to take most shots with little fear of dying. They are expensive, but they are the poor mans thunderhammer stormshield termies(the jump guys actuall cost more)

Yes they are a lot of fun to paint, especially if you spend the money on a BT Venerable Dreadnought from forge world. And they can be converted easily with shields and helmets from knight miniatures to give them an even greater crusading feel. They are great IMO

Ive been painting and playing black templars since.....geze....all my 40k years and STILL love playing them, yes they have taken a hit in 5th but they are supposed to rumored get a new dex in 6th. saying that the templars are still competitive to play, no they wont be a space wolf or ig but in the right hands you can still win. also whats cooler than a space knight? also the assault terminators are pure win. land raider + assault terminators = death star. just aim that unit at one of the biggest T6 and below unit and fire it and most likely that unit you are charging at will die a slice and dice death. But remember.......accept any challenge no matter the odds!

BTs look great. But they seem to falter now a days. I havent seen any competitive BTs in a while. Oh well guess thats what happens when a ton of the people at your shop has either won aard boyz or been to the finals more then once.
