Ive been rereading the rules very carefully and im curious on peoples opinions:
Purple Sun and Pit of shades state every model touched by the template must take an initiative test or die

No grey area there .. if it touchs you you test

Under Look out Sir it states :
Any template that hits the character he may make a look out sir roll and dodge it on any roll other than a 1

No grey area there.. templates let you take a look out sir

Under warmachines Stone thrower it says:
All models under the template auto take a strength 3 hit

Under Magical Vortexes:
Says this is a template

So unless im completely ready for the short bus. This seems to me you would get look out sirs as the same wording is used for the stone thrower template .. and under look out sir it doesnt say shooting templates .. it just says templates.

Curious on everyones opinion ... this if correct would fix purple sun and pit of shades ... although .. dwellers is still a problem.

See the BRB FAQ:

Page 93 – Champions and Shooting
Change the third paragraph to “The only exceptions to this are
attacks that use a template (such as cannons, stone throwers,
breath weapons, magical vortexes and so on).”

The above is a change of the details for Look Out, Sir!

I suggest you don't believe anything posted by thedarkavenger unless confirmed by other regular posters here at Dakka. He has shown he is incapable of basic English comprehension.

You are correct though, CMC. When a unit containing a unit champion and 0 or more characters gets hit by a template, if the unit champion and/or one of the characters gets hit by said template they are allowed a Look out Sir! check to pass the hit off to an ordinary trooper, provided of course there are 5 rank and file models of the same unit type. Note: the unit champion does NOT count as a rank and file model for the purpose of the character's Look out Sir! roll.

In this way, it is possible (but somewhat unlikely) for a unit champion to be killed by shooting attacks or spells.
