Hey, I'm not sure which forum this belonged in but I'm sure it falls under WYSIWYG.

I currently do not have the funds to buy a box of Sternguard and would like to try them out, my question is, would 5 regular marines be able to count as 5 barebones sternguard if I pointed it out to my opponent well in advance?

I have a few spare parts from a scout set I could glue onto the marines to make them look more well equipped (I never glue special details onto any of my other models).

Thank you

Yes, it would probably be fine, but the best way to distinguish them would be to paint them differently from the rest of the marines. The spare scout parts is a good idea.

Anything to differentiate from the normal "stock and File" marines will be adequate.

If they're painted as veterans and they have boltguns then they're sternguard. End of story.

Alrighty

I'm gonna go glue some bitz to them and maybe try to make their boltguns look a little more special issue.

Thanks for all the answers guys

It would rather depend on whether the army contains other identical miniatures that does not represent Sternguard.

A different paintjob would imo distinguish them just fine.

That's certainly an option. You could also just give them veteran markings... The codex has a few suggestions on how to denote veteran status (Crux badges, different coloured helmets or a coloured stripe, or adding a wreath...) ... depending on what Chapter you are using, there are other options, like just painting them a different colour or using different marks of armour.

Basically, they just need some identifying feature that lets your opponent know that they're different from Tactical Marines.

I gave all of mine shields from fantasy on their bases/knees/backpacks too differentiate them, it was a little thing, but that plus the paintjob really makes them stand out. Also, FWIW, it's super easy to paint laurel wreaths on their helmets, just one thin line of green going around about 3/4 of the way, then little lines of green coming off of the main line. Boom, instant veteran.

The models themselves are the same as regular marines(although I think the box comes with beakie helmets) literally the only thing separating them is the paintjob which is usually a different colored helmet. Other than a "veteran" paintjob there is no way to distinguish them as far as I can tell.

Not quite - the sternguard (and vanguard) models are regular marines with extra bling. For some chapters, blinging up their veterans would be very out of character - for others it's totally appropriate.

Veterans are separated from normal marines by their weapons and markings. Extra laurels, seals, unusual armour marks, etc are thoroughly optional.

Paint the helmets white and that would work great.

The box magazines in the SG boxset are purely decorative - each model is a veteran armed with a boltgun.

Just give them the veteran markings, and let your opponent know. Extra wargear is always cool.

I painted all of mine the same as the rest my army. However they all have a combi-melta so they kinda stand out <,<
