Hi there, just curious, is there any fluffy-competitive armies out there? I was considering starting a Blood Angel Army based around the Flesh Tearers or building a strictly Thousand Son CSM army. Regardless of how competitive they may be, I still want to build them. I'm just curious if anyone out there has built any successful competitive (or semi-competitive) themed armies? If so post, or if you have ideas for a neat themed army that you think would be competitive post it as well.

The purpose is never to kill the enemy just to be killing him but to make him do what you want him to do. Not killing... but controlled and purposeful violence."

Nurgle themed armies, in both the daemonic and space marine flavors work pretty well. Build either an Epidimius list for the Daemons to work around or a Plague Marine with Nurgle Daemon Prince chaos Marine army and they'll do decent in most games

Raven Guard, depending on build can be quite successful... Using a Drop Pod assault type list, you can have a high risk/high reward list, that if things go right, are some tough lists to crack.. though, if things go wrong they can go horribly wrong.

Blood Angels jump pack armies, imperial guard mech? Most armies can be justified by fluff if you really want to, it's there to give you ideas, not to limit you.

It's hard to have an Ork army that isn't fluffy while being competitive; same with Dark Eldar. There's always precedent for an Ork biker gang led by a mob of the toughest nob bikers, while with Dark Eldar there's multiple covens and kabals that can apply to just about anything.

I second the Orks. Every competitive ork build is fluffy. I would venture to think that any ork build is fluffy, actually.

Except probably running Deathskulls without lootas or vehicles(spell?) and Snakebites without boars and Squiggoths(to replace vehicles).

That's the thing, you don't need to have an army exclusive to 1 klan. You can have snake bites running in the transports of deathskulls, goffs riding squiggoths, or any other combination.

Orks go to battle in whatever formations they can find. We can field armies that reflect that.

Right now I'm building an IG Cadian army that looks similar to the Starship Troopers (color scheme [from the movie]), Trying to reflect their mass numbers by going footslogger. Haven't done to much in terms of conversions, but I'm considering some pig iron heads for vet squads, make them look like the cartoon variants.

All in all, I'd say an IG footslogger army is semi-competitive and rather fluffy.

I've always liked how the Orks look like a mass of whatever they could pull together. Truly masters of the fluff.

Do you also make sure they're within 3" of the enemy before firing to reflect the shooting from the movie?

of course! I also just have them run in random directions and charge into anything!
