I, being totally new to 40k, have a question about new codexes.
When a new codex comes out for my army, can they get rid off old units, making the models useless? Or do they only add and change things?
I'd appreciate some clarification on this.

They can completely get rid of units if they so choose, but such occurrences are rare.

The Golden Throne

Old unit composition become irrelevant and new unit composition has to be in accordance with the new codex. Very rarely does a whole model type become obsolete.

They can do whatever they want but they don't remove units often, if ever. They'll often change equipment options and whatnot though.
