It seems a new 40k game is a foot, this time an MMORPG. It features hopefully every race, though only the IoM has been announced. Hope to god this works out, or most likely, it will crash and burn. It seems you can choose your race and just fire away. I'm hoping if you choose guard, you'll eventually get to use some of the heavier artillery, or else you're just all around raped. Any opinions or ideas?

Good lord this won't work.

Guardsmen, Fire!

Very old news. Why do you think it will crash and burn? It's going to be an MMORPGTPS type of game where you aim and shoot as per a third person shooter but level up like you would in an RPG. It's got the team behind Darksiders on it, so it's got a competent team. It might be a bit much to bite off, but it could work. Either way it's not coming out until 2012; they're showing stuff too early for it, and have been sine last year when it was formally announced with a trailer.

That's also how Tabula Rasa worked and sadly (I actually enjoyed it!) this did not save it from being closed down. Another big feature - actually the most important aspect, I'm sure - would naturally be the 40k license, but if you look at Warhammer Online this isn't exactly a guarantee for success either.

I'm still looking forward to it and hope to read more about what they have in store, though. I'm very sceptical - in my personal experience, MMOs (especially those of the current post-WoW generation) suffer from canon-rape and dumbed-down themeparkism in order to appeal to the lowest common denominator - but there's still a certain amount of hope that they might get it right. I'll definitively give it a try and see how it feels before casting final judgment. Let's hope that IG is playable.

40k is much more popular than fantasy. And recently it seems the MMO market has opened up a bit more and DM would be filling a hole that's currently empty.

Tabula Rasa also had that huge contest for lots of money that never got fulfilled because they didn't make enough money to actually fund it. I think Tabula Rasa wasn't marketed well enough and there was some incompetence going on if they couldn't even fund their own contest. The game also went through about as many changes as Duke Nukem Forever before it came out, and had a six year and hundred million dollar development cycle. I never played it so for all I know it's one of the greatest games ever made, but it seems like it was more or less doomed to failure.

I wouldn't guarantee this game as a success, but the 40k videogames have spread a lot of positive word of mouth on the IP, as they've all sold well and received good reviews since the first Dawn of War. I see Space Marine continuing the trend, which will hopefully build up some anticipation for Dark Millennium.

There isn't exactly a lot of information on it yet so to poo poo it already is a bit premature, in my opinion.

I am pretty excited about this in all honesty, and I've never been one to play an MMO.

heh ... poo poo ..

I couldn't tell from the trailer what the gameplay style was. SRM, you say that it is a third person shooter? That would work. If it's squad based, though, I'm not really interested.

Why wouldn't you be interested in squad based? If anything it would actually convey the scale of 40k. Joe Madureira, who's running the art on this, said that you'd be able to customize your character to an unprecedented level, if that's your concern. There's talk of it being squad based, with larger squads for Guard or Orks and smaller squads for Marines or what have you, but that's not confirmed by any stretch.

I'm thoroughly hoping it will have infantry squads. Not necessarily for SM, but for IG for sure. It's the only way to balance the game without violating the fluff.

And I hope to the Emperor that the game will not have everybody and his mum run around with energy shields...

I would be happy if there was a script in the game that scanned OOC chatter in the Imperial sections of the game. Bad-mouth the Emperor, even in OOC? An Inquisitor appears behind you and executes your character with a point-blank bolt round to the dome.

Then the game deletes your character.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I'm hoping that the assault part of the game has a little more variety than most MMOs i.e. I hit you, you hit me. Nothing complicated, maybe something like in Arkham Asylum. Actually, PvP should be the major focus of the whole thing.

Ah, the smell of hope. Smells like gasoline, either you go on a joy ride or it goes up in flames leaving you a little singed, might also turn into vapour.

Anyway, I hope GW keeps a chokehold onto the IP so we don't get nightly raids to slay the Emperor and such. DoW II is as close to current MMOs as I'd feel comfortable playing. You have your 3rd person view with "spells", levelling system and squad combat.

Grind is the real issue though. I don't play games that force upon me tedious & boring things to progress/be competitive. A epic story arc that puts you into conflict with players of the other races with territorial control for the endgame would be ideal imho.

I don't enjoy squad based video games. I just don't. I was so disappointed with DoW 2 that I returned it.

While the TPS element looks interesting, I have a gnawing fear that such a system when implemented in an MMO will result in the player base becoming like...well, this guy.

Considering Planetside is an MMOFPS and the player base isn't that bad, I wouldn't expect it.

I'm sure it's going to be a great game. The guys behind it are a good team. I'm just not sure that it is going to be a game I will enjoy.
