Hello,

Been getting better with my painting but never used red much (did ogres & dwarfs).

Now I primed my arachnarok black and though hmm mechrite would do as its a foundation. But even applied neat its sooo thin, it may as well be a wash!

Am I using the wrong primer colour? cos even on white its useless!

Thanks for any advice.

You'll have to do 2 or 3 layers usually.

You might want to check out Army Painter colored primer. I used the Dragon Red on my Arachnarok, pictures are in my gallery under "works on progress". That's the red primer, one coat of Baal Red wash, and highlighted with a drybrush of Blazing Orange. I think it looks great on a giant spider.

Except you´re using an airbrush red on black will need at least 10 layers to even come close to looking good.
May you want to go grey to red b/c that´s way easier and wont take that many layers but black to red can be a mess.

Mechrite Red should do well to cover most color primers.
That being said, it can't hurt to thin it some in order to get smoother coverage and prevent obscuring details.

When I go to paint red on a model (a Blood Angel for example) I try and use a light grey primer. This helps me see the detail on the model and keeps me from having to paint more than one good coat with some touch ups.
Here's how I paint Blood Angels showing how I use Mechrite Red on my models.

If you're up for stripping your model, a light grey primer might help out.
If not, you could always try a heavy drybrush of light grey over the black primer to help lighten it some.

When people ask me, "How do you build your army?"
I tell them its "The ten-zero factor, coolness ten, combat effectiveness... zero."

Cool, thanks for the advice. I primed my boar boys in leather brown from army painter. So much easier applying the red to the ir armour.
