Question from someone who hasn't played yet, just into the modeling right now, but soon going to play: are there community-accepted point-sizes for armies?
ie. Should I be building my army to 500, then 750, then 1000 ... 1250 ... 1500 ... 1750 and so on, or is it acceptable to bring in something like an 800-point army and expect to find games at the local club?

Generally increments of 250, starting at 500 at the least. 1000, 1500, 1750, 2000, 2500 are common. I'm sure it varies by club.

The increments of 250 is how it usually goes, but 1850 is standard for a lot of North American tournaments. If you show up to a game store with 800 points pretty much anybody will be happy to take a minute or two to drop 200 points from their army list.

I've always said if your new to the game aim for about 1000 points first. Then after that aim for 1500 because that seems to be a standard lower point tourney. Then from there expand in increments of 250.

This is such a relief. I've been trying to make effective 500-point lists, and though it's possible, it's like pulling teeth

Yea, go for 1000, or 1500 to start, most people will have lists in that range made already.
If they don't, they can usually whip out a 1000 point list in a matter of minutes.
