I haven't played in about 5 years and was wondering if you can still use forgeworld vehicles and designed vehicles from chapter approved and if people still do is it frowned upon? Just curious...

All rules are opponent's approval. However, GW has removed those words from most codexes and the Forgeworld stuff is "official" even though a significant amount of tournaments do not allow them.

Not sure about chapter approved, but the IA books now contain many of the rules for Forge World miniatures.

You can find many threads in this forum about 'Can I use Forge World Units and Rules'.

General consensus is: All games, with and without forge world, is with opponent's consent. Just like planet strike games, apoc games, and so on. Just be clear with your opponent before the game. "Wanna 1500 point game?" "Sure." "I have a few Forge World models." That's about as far as you can go. up to them if they still want to play.

As for frowned on? Not in my gaming group. We use a number of them. We have prohibited a few outside of Apoc games, but nearly all are fair game.

For tournaments, most do not allow. Some, however, specifically allow some/all units.

Finally, even if you don't use the rules for a FW model, there is probably a standard unit that it can "counts as" and would be fine to play with.

k thanks, i figured as much about the forgeworld stuff Im just more concerned about an IG Navy transport I made right before I left and hope all that time and money wasnt wasted lol

Was there a specific unit that this model was for? Was is just called IG Navy Transport?

k ill work on the photo, but its a Huey model i converted into a jump transport and designed with the chapter approved vehicle design specs back in the day. It actually looks awesome hovering over my troops just hope its not a hunk of junk now lol

An Imperial Guard Counts-as Valkerie, perhaps?

kronk has the right idea, if you are IG use it as a Valkyrie or Vendetta, if you are Blood Angels or Grey Knights use it as a Storm Raven.

There were lots of Storm Raven scratch builds and kit-bashes floating around before the official kit came out. I prefer a lot of those to the official kit!


As long as the kit-bash is similar to a similar, exiting model and doesn't provide a gross advantage via modeling, most people won't have an issue with it.

lol no i completely made it up. Its a custom creation and designed from Chapter Approved. There is no GW model for it. I just didn't know if you can still use custom vehicles from Chapter Approved... Im guessing no because I don't think people remember what I'm talking about haha

You're thinking of the VDR rules if I'm assuming, the rules that let you build your own vehicles. Yeah, you can't use those in tournaments or pickup games, but in a friendly game with someone you know, go for it. Also, could you please use proper capitalization and punctuation? It would make your posting much better for the rest of us.

I know what VDR was, I've been around that long. What we are saying is, people don't use VDR any more. Hell, people didn't use VDR when VDR was even a thing, at least where I played. Basically VDR = no. I would use it as a counts-as, or not at all.

Yea I figured as much. I do remember the VDR being very poorly designed so it makes sense that it would not last. Thanks for the help, was worth a shot.... at least it looks cool in the background on the shelf where I keep my army P.S. Sorry for the punctuation, I'm new to posting here.

The problem with vdr wasn't the rules, it was that it wasn't designed to be idiot-proof and it was the idiots who broke it.

Immobile superheavy AV14 bunkers with 100 boltguns and the like.

With players of a certain other mindset, it was fine.
