Not sure if this belongs here or int he modeling thread (went with this because it's 40k related)...
I'd like to start up a pure Thousand Son Tzeentch army, I've looked up tactics and good ways to build their army and I think they'd be interesting to play, both fluff and for semi-competitive games. I wanted this to be my go all out army, I plan on purchasing some things from forgeworld and whatever other neat addons I can get. The problem I'm facing is getting a hold of the bits/models. GW sells the 1K sons Models, but theire description of them is rather vague. Has anyone ever purchase them before? are they metal or plastic? If they're metal how similar are they gonna end up looking? Does anyone know a store that sells Thousand Son Bitz, I've looked around for a bit and what I've seen is very limited. Also, Does anyone know any good conversion steps for thousand sons? I've checked all over google and surprisingly I've found very little. Thank you in advance

I have done this and I can tell you its a pain in my arse. Not only do all the gunners on my tnaks have Thousand Sons heads and shoulder pads plus the Terminators have Thousand Sons heads as well. Also I ordered all the Forge-World doors for my vehicles and what not.
All I can say is. Its been quite more expensive for me to do then I had originally thought. Oh well the end product will look great.
Good luck with it!

Spartan, where did you get your head bitz from? or did you use the ones out of the GW box?
I'm driving up to a GW store next weekend to see what I can find.

I acquired them from all over. Ebay some guy sells the heads on there. Bartertown I got a lot of stuff off of there as well bits wise. There were also 1 time I bought the 1k Sons box and didnt make 1k sons because I needed the bits. I gave the legs and such to a friend and he converted a squad of ten Plague Marines. So we both won on that one.
It ended up being a little pricey to do but its well worth it if your really into the Thousand Sons.

So I've made a budget of $200-300 a month on bitz and model until this army is completed. I've found a few resin bitz that would work well to convert terminators to a more 1ksons look and I plan on using a few things from FW as well.
Anyway, before I buy anything I want to make sure I'm buying what I'll need and what I'll use, I'm aiming at 1850 points for starters and I'll add/subtract from that for battles. So, here's what I've come up with so far.
HQ
Chaos Sorcerer (190)
Personal Icon, Wings, Mark of Tzeentch, Bolt of Change, Doombolt
Elite
2 x Terminator Squads (220 ea)
4x Terminators, 1x Champion
5x Combi-plasma, Icon of Tzeentch
Troop
3 x Thousand Son Squads (339 ea)
8x Thousand Sons, 1x Sorcerer
Personal Icon, Bolt of Change
1x Rhino transport
Combi-Melta, Dozer Blade, Extra Armor
Total points 1647/1850
First, as you can see I'm short around 200 points, I'm not sure if I want to take another Chaos Sorcerer, or add more termies. Suggestions?
Second, a lot of the weapons and focus is directed towards anti-marine (a lot of people play SM at our LGS), I'm not sure how effective this would be against horde armies, but I still have a lot of rapid fire weapons so it should hold up nicely.
Any suggestions? I'm trying make this list as competitive as the fluff will allow.

Bolt of Change is, in my experience, pretty rubbish for busting tanks. So as your list stands now you have nothing effective for opening up enemy armour. Also, while lots of counts as stationary rapid fire weapons sounds good for hordes it is no where near enough. It doesn't have the range to really put dents in hordes before they become dangerous.
The biggest weakness of a unit of Thousand Sons is small arms fire, which is plentiful in hordes. Anything putting out large numbers of cheap attacks will ruin their day.
As such, you probably want to swap the Terminators to combi-meltas and spend your extra points on pieplates, either Defilers or Vindicators.

I like the idea of dreadnoughts as dedicated tank breakers, FW has a nice model for them as well, so it's not hard to convert into 1K sons. However, I don't like the crazed rule, it kind of dampens their effect as a tank buster by taking away their reliability.
Termies with combi-meltas sounds like a good idea. I mainly added the terminators so I could DS in next to an enemies 2+ save models and hit them with a plasma gun barrage and try and take them out. But, I think they'd b better served DS next to tanks and taking them out with meltas. I might keep one squad with plasma, the other with melta.
As far as spells go, I'm not too concerned about them at the moment, I can change that on paper at no cost to my wallet, models/bitz on the other and could end up costing me
[edit]
How effective are combi-meltas on rhinos?

Crazed rule makes them pretty unreliable, but as long as you stick to either Dual CCWs or Missile Launcher + CCW you can mitigate it mostly by firing Frags if you fire frenzy and keeping something Armour 11 as the closest. Dirt cheap too, for the price of one of those Terminator squads you can add 2 of these Dreadnoughts. They'd also provide a bit more armour saturation, as they're likely to be seen as more threatening than a Rhino and have better armour so will draw fire first.
I still run mine, because it's a nice model. But if I hadn't already bought one before the new codex was released I wouldn't be rushing out to add one to the army.

Hmmm, I really like the FW model they have, and I might pick it up just to have one. I've made a couple of changes to my Elite choices, which is still up in the air. Anyway, this is what I've come up with...
1x Terminator Squad
9x Terminators, 1x Champion
5x Combi-Meltas, 5x Combi-Plasma, Icon of Tzeentch
2x Dreadnoughts
ML, CCW/Bolter, extra armor
I figure I'd keep the Dreadnoughts close enough to eachother so that they can direct their fire on each other (if it comes down to it) and just load 'em up with a frag grenade.
The Termies can DS and either take out a group of 2+ save units or they can take down a tank or two.
Also, this brings me up to 1832/1850 points.

I'd drop 1 terminator to get to the sacred number, probably one with a Combi-Plasma. Then give at least 1 of the Terminators a Chainfist, for when someone runs their own dreadnought into them or for when the meltas run out of juice.

:O how could I forget the sacred number!?
K, new changes
1x Terminator Squad (405)
8x Terminators, 1x Champion
5x Combi-Meltas, 4x Combi-Plasma, Icon of Tzeentch, 3x CF (1 is on the champion)
This puts me at 1842/1850 points
Makes a formidable tank breaker unit.

haha, yea, I'm hoping the icons can help a bit with that one, I'm probably gonna have to play around a bit with them and see how useful they prove. All the units carrying an icon are pretty much gun-line so DS might not get me as close to the enemy as I need, but at least its guaranteed.
Gonna start ordering models at the end of the week hopefully I can find some deals on Ebay. If not I'm looking at quite a large chunk-o-money
So far I'm looking' at $340 at GW, 91.89 GBP (150$) at FW, and however much it will cost for conversion bitz.... Honestly, I was expecting a lot worse.

Something else to consider is long range support. I'm going to try out a Havoc Squad with 2 Missile Launchers and two Lascannons for some anti tank hate for my first game using my Thousand Sons Army later this month.

I have not considered Havoc squads or long range support, odd considering that's what I use in my guard army. I might add some at a later time and bring the count up to 2,000 points. My short term goal is to build a 1k sons army. My long term is to eventually have an army of around 1850-2000 points for each god, and a select chapter following them. The final objective is to have 10,000 points worth of CSM, the final 2,000 filled with Black Legion styled troops.
Also, I just looked at your Chaos Horde blog and I must say those models are amazing, I wasn't too sure at first becuase the picture quality wasn't all that great, but when I saw the better pictures I was amazed and it gave me some good ides of where to take my army. Keep up the good work, I hope to field an army equally as awe-inspiring .

For a pure Thousand Sons army, lesser and greater daemons are a must! They'll prevent you from getting over run with assault armies! Greater daemon is great for that one squad that gets tied up and boom, AS is now Greater Daemon! haha!

I would like to, but I doubt it will be any time soon, I leave for the desert in two months and I'll be there for another six. I'm probably gonna be ordering a LOT of models on ebay in this time. When I return I might start a progress blog

Obliterators don't really fit my theme. The Thousand Sons are free of the physical changes that overcame others when they turned to chaos. They have a "cleaner" look to them and considering they're pretty much ghosts in armor you'd never see them without a helmet.

One thing to remember with obliterators and 1k sons is that they experiment with daemonic artifacts and devices all which could summon control or even change forms and alliances so anything is possible Thousand sons have such a rich background and pacts with everyone its easy to make anything fit.
