I've used spraypaint since it first appeared. Lately though I tried using Army painter black primer and did not get a smooth finish. Changed back to Citadel and the same thing happened! Now live in dread of spraying anything...

It depends for me. If I want a brighter model, I prime white and then wash black, If I want a darker model, I prime black.

Chaos black all the way. The white is okay for brighter colors but it always seems to come out chalky for me. The black goes on nice and smooth.

I used a coat of scorched brown as a base coat. Its great for warmer models, or if your just going for dirty brown tanks like I usually do. =P

As of last weekend I will be airbrushing with a 1:1 mix of Golden Gesso and Golden Airbrush Medium. I only need a dusting of it to give the next coat of paint some tooth to grab on to.

Here is an example of one of my test minis.

I give them a spray with white primer or black primer
I don't know why so many people prefer black primer, I like white primer better, but what primer you use depends on what you're going to paint the model

From what I understand, "basecoat" is different from priming. I prime them with Black Spray Primer (Krylon), not just Black Spray Paint. Then I basecoat them with a brush with whatever GW paint I decided on using.

Grey primer from Walmart. Is light enough to use bright colours effectively, and doesn't chalk up like white.

Grey spray primer. Not fussed about brand to be frank. Using rustoleum at the minute. Sometimes prime white for Eldar, but that's your lot.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

Either black or grey primer, depending on what I'm painting.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

I prime by spray can (Chaos Black or Armory Black), then basecoat with a pot and brush. I might start using white for my next project though to try out some of the basecoating techniques I saw on a video.

depending on what color the model is going to be, you should use either white grey or black primer. important because the paint needs something to stick to.

the base coat for most of my models was always a boltgun drybrush.

lately with my wifes nids its been a white primer and a dip in my own solution (similar effect to other products but I made it and its way cheaper) when that dries its paint, then another dipping as a sealant.

I prime with a rattle-can, whatever can of primer I've got laying around (black, grey, or rust even, usually krylon).

Base coat? well, I'm gonna get yelled at, but I actually thin out latex paint, and airbrush it on. Covers well, and not too rough for my liking. Takes the acrylics well too.

Depends.

For one off models, I'll typically base with black or white gesso.

For squads I'll basecoat with cheap black or white spray paint. If there's a color of spray paint that matches the base color I want I'll use that instead. Krylon and Rustoleum camoflage spray paints are good for this as is krylon ruddy brown primer.

I prime with white, then basecoat with a few layers of washes for 90% of my models and the results have been significantly better. The pictures in my gallery are before I started this method.

It really depends on what you are trying to paint. I would definatley do that to a vehicle, however a model with A LOT of tiny parts that are very close together would receive a white primer, hit everything appropriate colors, and then wash appropriately and then hit with dry brushing appropriate colors

I don't do black, because it results in a significantly darker model, and I prefer to wash with a darker wash, or more times if I want a dark model.

There's a lot of variation, it seems, in people's definition of "basecoat." I don't use a dedicated primer on plastic, I "prime" or "basecoat," depending on your usage of the terms, with the same ColorPlace spray paints that Ma55ter_fett uses - flat black for most models, although I also have a can of white I plan to mess around with. After that, I start blocking in (again, there's variation in terminology - either "basecoats" or "undercoats") with Citadel Foundations, if I have the appropriate color, or VGC/Citadel color, if I don't.

Personally, I wouldn't touch GW sprays with a ten foot pole, based solely on the price. From what I've heard, they're plagued with so many problems beyond that, there's nothing to justify even a trial can, to me. None of my armies lend themselves toward priming/basecoating in a specific color, either, so I haven't bothered comparing Army Painter sprays with comparable colors from the usual brands.

I'd like to point out that base coating is not the same as priming.

Primer allows for paint to adhere properly to the model.

A base coat is a general layer of paint that is the foundation for the color or colors that you will be using on the model.

GW Foundation paints are made to be base coats.

Brush paint grey. Kustom mixed, true middle grey.

Except for the skin. I've got this green I mixed up that's perfect first coat on grey plastic. I have no idea how that happened.
