I am new to HE, and am curious whether Swordmasters or White Lions work better.

Welcome; honestly, WL vs SM is a pure personal preference choice most of the time. WL have more protection against shooting (if it allows armour saves and isn't S7 or greater; 6 if armour piercing) and one more point of strength, but Swordmasters have 1 more point of WS and an extra attack each.

If you face a lot of gunlines or high toughness troops and monsters, then White Lions are better, because usually the units are small enough for the low number of attacks the WL's get to not be a large issue; against rank'n'file troops or lower toughness/worse armour save, then swordmasters are better.

That said, it really doesn't matter a whole lot unless you face a lot of gunlines, then you really do need White Lions over swordmasters; the monsters/lots of weaker models are really only minor specialities.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
