So, as far as I knew all AI was banned in the imperium. But I just read that the Ad-Mech has an armed robot division. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Legio_Cybernetica Is this still cannon or has it been written out?

Can anyone shed any more light on this?

I think that the robots they do create are severely limited. Unless it has a live, biological brain at the center, they keep it too simple to think for itself. That's of course, just my opinion.

If I remember correctly they need to be controlled by a sort of tech priest, having about 4-5 to each guy controlling them.

Basically they're like combat servitors at best, but likely more durable.

York/London(for weekends) oh for the glory of the british rail industry

There is a massive difference between AI and robots. Robots that work within a defined program limit are fine, robots that have AI are not.

This is due to the fact that AI robots have a history of realising that that they are far better than humans and decide to destroy them.

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

Being robotic doesn't necessarily mean you have AI. I'd imagine they have set commands and are unable to think for themselves

Fair enough, it makes sense i suppose, pl;us the article mentions that they have very strict oaths binding them. I'm just suprised there isn't more mention of them anywhere.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Another point I read on Lexicanum is that on the page for the Ad-Mech it mentions no intact STC's ever being recoverd but I'm sure I read in one of the Gaunts Ghost novels there are. I know the one that is taitned get destroyed but someone mentions one that just makes blades that are used by astartes and swords for high ranking officals and what not.

No, that wasn't an intact Standard Template Constructor.

It was the plans for a unique, monomolecular edged blade that the STC contained. The Constructor itself was damaged beyond repair.

Still cannon.

They feature in a number of battles in The First Heretic. There's also an aside within that book which talks about the fine line between those machines walk.

The Legio Cybernetica is still around but they have extremely primitive programming. Advanced AI is strictly outlawed.

Yep as said before the robots are programmed to do simple and limited tasks - move forward, shoot everything infront you. Just as the robots we have now with the slight diffrence that the Legio Cybernetica's are a bit more advanced.

If you have played Mass Effect 2, you would know that the Citadel Council had outlawed AI. The security mechs in the game are described as being given a huge repertoire of scenarios, and acting accordingly to the most fitting scenario, thus avoiding the need for AI. I think the AdMech robots would operate in a similar fashion.

There just robots only have limited abilities,And are simply programmed for specific jobs or general tasks. Not AI buddy.

on a completely side driven note, i can remember when robots were playable in wh40k, back in the days of rogue trader. while i never played with them, players had to choose and "create" the program for the robots and then they would do exactly what you told them to do using a pre defined set of rules.

i cannot remember all of the details on how to "program" a robot, but i know they were listed in the warhammer 40,000 rogue trader compendium. the one with ultra-marines on the front where one of them has "color me cobalt" on his shoulder pad.

should be in there and while it is written over and robots obviously aren't listed anymore, its still well worth a read while you are at it.

See White Dwarf 104, from August '88 (I just happen to have it here), Chapter Approved, Imperial Robots.

Basically, they have a hard-wired cortex , firmware, which lets it operate at a basic level away from combat, and then for each combat mission it is given wetware, a sliver of bioplastic that contains all the routines and instructions needed for the combat mission.

"Bloody typical, they've gone back to metric without telling us."

They have limited AI programming, nothing fancy... Advanced AI has been build to work in co-operation with Human mind. That way there is no way for them to rebel. And some of them go berserk from time to time. And remember - this is Adeptus Mechanicus, they are literal Human Robots..

Reading First Heretic they cover a battle in where the Legio Cybernetika was present. There were various classes of what essentially were limited intelligent servitors. Although I do not think there were any human parts in them.

However, they did fight well enough that a couple were made honorary Legionnaires by various legions during the Great Crusade.

When you have respect from the Astartes, you know they had to be badass.
