I got a free Chaos army! Need help setting it up!

A buddy of mine is giving me his Black Legion army because he never plays anymore and he is leaving the country for a year or two. I haven't played 40K for a few years and back then I had a large Ork army and I loved playing 40K but I just haven't gotten around to building an army again.

So here is what I am getting, I was hoping I could get some tips on an army list for 1000 to 2000 points. I plan on buying a few more things just for tactics and more choice so let me know what you guys think I should pick up too.

Abbadon
5 Terminators
Rhino
Landraider
3 bike squad
5 Havocs
20 Beserkers
20 Marines

So first off just from reading a few things I know I need more rhinos, just not sure how many more I need, one guy I will be playing with likes to have huge epic 5000 point multi person multi session games so I am pretty sure I need a bit more to fill that up. I plan on buying a defiler and a dread maybe some raptors and obliterators, just not sure what plays well and what I should add.

Well, Abbaddon and 4 Termies could go in the ancient LR.
Then you can field 2x 10 CSM, 1x 10 Berzerkers in the Rhino, Havocs, and finally the Bikers for harrassing.
It provides a decent start, but I'd grab two more Rhinos for the CSM and max-out the HS.

Save yourself the cash and pain of buying a dread. Get 2 demon princes instead. Those will be minis you will use every game. Not one you'll use until it shoots your own troops in the back a few times, and then you realize it sucks.
Also skip the raptors until you get some oblits or 2 defilers, and rhinos.

It all depends by the level you'll want to set up your list.

I want to play at the local game store on sunday, which is the day they do some sort of warhammer gaming thing, I am assuming tournaments.

I don't really care about the fluff too much, I am going to buy a different HQ than Abbadon and set up some back story involving the chapter and the character. But I am not sure what is true Black Legion and what works well and doesn't fit with their theme

Thanks for the input, I will pick up some Demon Princes, I am hearing good things about the Lash.

I also hear good things about plague marines, are they good? I hear the dreads are hit and miss so I will avoid them for now. How is the defiler though, besides being an expensive target.

You can use any units in the Chaos codex if youplay Black Legion. I would definitely get yourself at least 1 Daemon Prince. You will use him everygame. Thats how good they are. Also invest in some Rhinos and a Plague Marine unit to put on objectives every game. They are hard to kill.

You should get at least

1 Demon Prince (with wings)
1 Full Unit of Obliteraters (long range shooting, but don't forget... rapid firing plasma guns ... thats the real killer with these guys)
2+ Rhino's (get your troops up the field, block assaults, sacrfice to block enemy movement, or rush up late game to contest objectives)
1 Defiler (counter unit for large units of lesser demons, tyranid swarm units, etcccc)
