I am currently building a Space marine army, and would like to add some sniper scouts at some point. However, I don't like the models available in the standard box set, so I have decided to make my own from the standard set. I have millions of Imperial Guard lasguns lying around, so does anybody have any ideas I can use to convert them into sniper weapons? Aside from just adding a scope, obviously.

Get some plastic/metal roundstock, really thin piece for the sights and cut off the end of the barrel and replace with longer round stock (two sizes, bigger on the end with a 45 degree cut).

I would cut the nose off of the end of the barrel, extend it, and then model a more standard silencer using green stuff or just an appropriate cylindrical piece (kroot barrels could be added for both of these parts, if you have them). Then, you could add a bipod using a paper-clip and some green stuff and finally model a sling using a paper-clip and green stuff.

You could convert them to look like any one of the many types of real world sniper rifles: http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sniper-rifles/de/walther-wa-2000-e.html

Personally that one's one of my favorites and would be pretty easy to convert out of a lasgun (whilst being obviously a sniper rifle). Going for something as short as this also would explain the ridiculously short range all the 40k sniper rifles suffer from- god knows why a Vindicare Assassin doesn't have an unlimited range...great for apocalypse battle.

I made 4 snipers for my IG.

I used small round toothpicks cut down to size to extend the barrel length.
I also used toothpicks, with some whittling down, to make the scopes.
I used snipped twist ties to make the bi-pods for the fronts of the rifles.

I have my snipers in various poses so I had to tilt thier heads to be properly looking through the scopes.
A lot of people at my local shop commented on how well they look.

Good luck

When I made my Telion I took a SM bolter and cut the barrel off so I had a flush end. I then took an IG Lasgun and cut it in half so you have the barrel and a nice length of gunstock.
Glue the IG gunstock/barrel to the end of the bolter and you have a sniper rifle that still has the SM feel to it.

I would:
-Take a set of IG HW sights, or binoculars cut in half, and add the scope
-add a bipod to the front of the weapon
-replace the barrel tip (not necessarily extending it though, lasgons are honking huge to begin with)
-add a purity seal, and if possible, swap out the aquilla with one of the bolter details
- I mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmight swap out the lasgun clip with the bolter magazine (with some modification to not look sicle-pattern)

If youre feeling tekky, maybe add a wire or something going from the scope's eye-piece, leading up to one of the eyes on the scout.

Thanks for the suggestions. Some great ideas here, though I've already gone and made four sniper-looking weapons from what I had in my bits box. For anyone interested, I took the scopes from three Black Reach bolters and one Scout pistol and stuck these near the back of the lasgun's optical railing. Then I removed the barrels and replaced them with those of some pistols from the Empire Pistoliers set of the Fantasy Range. Not a massive conversion but it really has worked well I think. I'd put some pictures up but I don't have a camera handy, unfortunately.

This sounds pretty cool. May have to steal this idea to try myself.

It dawns on me I never took a ref pic of this guy. I have corrected that deficiency in my behaviour.
Yeah yeah yeah...the eyes aren't painted yet. So sue me.
Sniper conversion:

I imagine if you shave the bolters site off and add a scope it would look tons better.

I think you should shave off the winged skull on the Bolter. There should only be one Aquila/skull on each gun.
Also, nothing says stealthy like bright purple armor.

For my cheap sniper conversion, I used a guide online where they surgested to use a las pistol, lasgun and rangefinder/scope thing from the IG motar.

Cut off the lasgun barrel, then cut off the las pistol in middle of the sights(?) end. Glue the front part of the laspistol onto the lasgun and remove the lasgun sight and replace it with the motar bit. Bingo you have yourself a a easy to make sniper weapon.

I've only got some long-las conversions I did for my light infantry guard. I had a lot of tau bits lying around so I ended up cutting one of the barrels from a spare burst cannon and putting a 45 degree cut at the end... cut a lasgun down to the stock and added the barrel. The scopes ended up being... I think I used a trimmed up barrel of a crisis suit flamer. They look pretty good, actually.
