So I'm really new to the game and was just wondering if you have to paint your army one of the colors in the codex. I know this is probably a dumb question and all but I just wanted to check.

The only restriction you have is paints available. Though if you play space marines some people may prefer to see the codex color scheme or a decedent chapter if you play BA or something similar, most people are totally fine with whatever you toss on 'em

Paint them in literally any scheme you can imagine. If you want pink Space Marines, go for it. This really doesn't belong in the showcase forum though, which is only for completed models.

Dude, paint them however the hell you want to! If you can figure out how to tie-dye them, go for it! And post them here, because I totally want to see that!

Nope, color is _completely_ irrelevant, except, possibly, for the Ork vehicle upgrade, 'Red Ones Go Fasta!,' and even that isn't set in stone as so long as you're consistent in painting all you vehicles with that upgrade blue.

And saying that you play, 'Gray Knights' and then put down models painted hot pink, while 100% legal, would also be pretty funny.

It would be very hard. Maybe if you got them uniformly white and then used watercolors, then sealed the whole model.

Not quite true. It depends on your region. Recently went to a tournament with my Space wolf army that was not painted as your standard space wolf colors.

Never had a problem with any color scheme before in my region and I go by this adage. "I bought the rules, I bought the codex, I even bought your paint.

I'll paint them as I see fit".

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

You brought them to a tournament...and what? All you've told us is that you played in a tournament. In what way did this give you problems? Finish the story!

Personally I find Codex paint schemes to be predictable and boring.

As others have said, paint what you think looks cool. You are spending hundreds of dollars on your toy soldiers, might as well get the finish you want on them.

Lots of people make up their own chapter and paint the space marines to their own design. Then they say they "count as" Black Templars or Space Wolves or whatever.

Why is everyone assuming space marines? Perhaps he wants pink lizardmen!

I assumed he was referring to codex-colours, ie space marines.
