Subject: 500pt Eldar Starter Army

Tail-spinning Tomb Blade Pilot

Hey all, I've been playing 40K for about 6 months after being dragged in by several of my friends. While I've gotten quite good at the game, my little brother wants to start playing it as well. After playing a few games with some of our armies he decided on Eldar. I'm trying to work out a nice small 500pt list that would be general enough to not waste models in the future, but useful enough to be playable.
The list needs to be able to take all comers as between myself and my friends we can field 500pts of just about anything.
Anyway, he's fairly limited on funds at the moment, so I wanted to design something that would cost as little as possible to get off the ground. I settled on the below, but I have very little experience playing Eldar, especially at such low point levels. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
HQ (83pts)
* Farseer (83pts)
Doom, Singing Spear
Troops (347pts)
* Dire Avengers (197pts)
5x Dire Avenger
* Exarch
Diresword and Shuriken Pistol
* Wave Serpent
Shuriken Cannon, Twin-Linked Missile Launcher
* Guardians (150pts)
10x Guardians, Starcannon
* Warlock
Enhance, Witchblade
Heavy Support (70pts)
* War Walker Squadron (70pts)
* War Walker
Missile Launcher, Missile Launcher
As you can see, the list is designed around a battleforce and a finecast farseer w/ warlocks. The 2 unused warlocks can be added in as the army size increases.

For 500pts. and limited money, you've got the right idea. A battleforce with added Farseer is really the best way to go.
I'd try:
Farseer - 130pts.
w/Runes of Witnessing, Spirit Stones, Doom, Guide
Dire Avengers - 92pts.
w/ Exarch; twin-shuriken cannons, bladestorm
• Wave Serpent - 100pts.
w/ Twin-linked Shuriken Cannons
Guardians - 125pts.
w/ Warlock; embolden, Scatter Laser
War Walker - 60pts.
w/ Twin Scatter lasers
total = 500pts.
This would work quite well; farseer goes with Dire Avengers scooting about in the Wave Serpent and bladestorming stuff. The rest provides covering fire.

First off, let me say thank you for the advice. I'm not really well versed in Eldar tactics XD
Are the Scatter Lasers a better option over the missile launchers, or is that for point conservation? I'm so used to playing Blood Angels with a Devastator Squad for support that I just kind of assumed that the missile launchers was the way to go.
Edit:
Also, I think your math is a bit off. 130 + 92 + 100 + 125 + 60 = 507 points (not that this isn't close enough for the games he'd be playing or anything  )

You're most welcome
Usually, Scatter lasers are the preferable choice because A) they're cheaper and B) you get more shots. However, if you're lacking blast templates, go with the EML by all means.
Ahh...Math is most definitely not my strong point! Sorry about that, I'm sure you could trim a few things you don't like!

farseer w/ doom, ROW (the one that lets you take your psy tests on 3d6 minus the lowest) - 90
9x dire avengers w/ exarch, bladestorm and avenger shurikan catapults - 140
9x dire avengers w/ exarch, bladestorm and avenger shurikan catapults - 140
wraithlord w/ shurikan cannon and scatter laser - 130(I think)
Its a nice list. I always run with 3 wraithlords, a farseer and 10 dire avengers but I'm saving up fo another 10

Would be possible, but would lead to being expensive for him to intro into the game with. Remember my brother does not have a lot of cash available, and the extra $50 would be tough. Also, that list is a little bit more squishy for a TAC list at this point level.
I could, for example, field two assault marine squads, a devastator squad w/ 4 ML, and a librarian with shield and sword for the same point cost.
If money were no object, I'd probably go that route, but he's likely to be stuck at this point level for at least a while, so I wanted something a tad bit more durable, and the wave serpent turns the dire avengers into a scary unit at that point level. Especially since you have to bust the serpent first.
I appreciate the input though.
