I'm currently planning to make some Irish National Army (Free State) models in 28mm for some Civil War skirmishing.
The uniform was very similiar to British late WW1, but with German stye helmets.
I've found these for the heads http://store.warlordgames.co.uk/germans-in-plain-steel-helmets----figureheads-6927-p.asp and was wondering if any o you could recommend models that would work for the body, and fit up reasonably well for size. I'd prefer to get them in plastic, as I have very little experience in converting.
Thanks in advance.

Renegade Minatures are probably your best bet, there are as far as im aware of no plastic 28mm manafactures that do WW1.
Renagade are cheap (est?), look cool and are resin to boot.

The Warlord ones are the wrong helmets.
They are the M35/40 pattern, very different from the helmets used by the Free State Army that were based on the M1918 Stalhelm pattern but made by Vickers of England.
However those helmets were not worn during the ICW but were used after that period. During the Irish Civil War the normal British helmet was used.
The period is far easier to do in 20mm with actual figures produced for the period.
You can get IWI stuff but cunrettly no ICW is available in 28mm.
One of my club mates down here in Kildare has a 20mm Free State Army to go with his IWI and ICW collections.

Hmmm, that makes thing trickier. The main reason I wanted to do this is that my brother has ordered me a bunch of Musketeers IRA figures in 28mm as a present. I thought it would be nice to fight the Civil War as well as the IWI.
By the way, nice article on the Vietnam truckers in WI.

Cheers, glad someone noticed it! :-)
Is it only FS you want to do?
You could get either Renegade or Great War Miniatures WW1 British and paint them up as FS troops... Just ignore the gas mask bags they are carrying...
Or you could use some of the Musketeer Miniatures range and do either ADRIC or Black & Tans.
If you want to fight his IRA with them, just use WW1 British.
In fact you could use the early WW1 stuff as most men worn a soft cap anyway... Again the one issue is the putees...
You also get to have various armoured cars, Crossley tenders, Lancia's and even 18-pounder guns!
You could use these as FS with the right paintjob...

I'll definitely be getting some Tans and RIC, I just thought the Staters would give a bit more variety. I'll probably be using the Flying Lead rules, which means I won't need to splash out on huge armies, so I may as well get a few different forces.
And the idea of doing some alternative history stuff is also quite tempting.
Speaking of which, what would you do for Irish Citizens' Army?

Renegade have to be the cheapest metal figures on the market right now, I really dont know how he does it, his prices are more then reasonable, especially if you buy regiment packs.
Damn good stuff as well, I used his WW1 Germans for a VBCW force.

I've found this site, http://reivercasting.wordpress.com/anglo-irish-wars-1916-1923-irish-rebellion-irish-war-of-independence-irish-civil-war/ which seems to make all I'd need without any conversions. Has anybody here bought anything from Reiver Castings before?

Difficult one.
Im not sure how many of the 250 that took part in 1916 had actual uniforms.
The uniform itself is simple enough, the Musketeer ADRIC would work, but you need the hat. Perhaps headswops or use the Reiver ones. One of the Musketeer Miniatures IRA figures is in ICA uniform.
That range was commissioned by a mate of mine a few years back.
Good luck with it all, and if you ever want to pop down to Kildare for a game, let me know.
