been really thinking about doing Samurai warfare . but in what scale the prry brothers have beautiful 28mm figs but thats going to be expensive or should i do 1/72 scale plastc or should i do penndraken 10mm . and do massive armies ? these are all available from thewarstore.com . also what rules would be more fitting ? black powder or hail ceasar ? any help would be great !

I've got some of the zvezda sets and they look rather nice. They are soft plastic though, just a heads up. I'll be basing them for Impetus, just waiting for the announced set of ashigaru to be released because you don't get many of them in the current boxes.

I would go 10mm, lots of smaller figs looks more epic. Then get a copy of Warmaster Ancients and Medieval Armies books. Then you can have huge battles that would look great on the table.

Wargames Factory is supposed to have 28mm figures in the pipe line for a fall release. But it would be a crying shame not to use the Perry figures if you go 28mm. Their figures are some of the best sculpts in the industry.

The question of scale comes down to what you want. Do you want to have the change to paint individual figures - then it has to be 28mm. If you want to cover the table with armies, then 10/15mm would be the right answer (or a really big 28mm project).

I think this period was discussed on the HC yahoo group. They seemed to favor Hail Caesar with a few tweaks for the use of gun powder. I guess it would come down to which weapon you want to emphasis - the sword or the gun.

There's a lot of mileage in samurai skirmish games.

If you want to do a mass battle game there are various ranges available in 10, 15 and 25mm. Traditional "Ancients" offers about five or six styles of Japanese army.

If you want to go into the gunpowder era, there are specialist rules for the Sengoku Jidai, or you can go for a more general Renaissance ruleset.

I would be looking at some of the more established rulesets such as Field of Glory or DBMM for Ancients, and a specialist set for gunpowder.

I'm not sure if WHAB covers Japanese.

Depending on the era chosen, Mongols and Koreans are realistic enemies for Japanese armies.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

There's a daft Army list for then in 'Armies of Antiquity' which is unfun to play against (just got whipped by them on Tues!, it even says it's not supposed to be taken seriously), the unofficial WAB Forum books have some more sensible lists which I haven't played but look ok....

'Armies of Antiquity' should be re released soon (not holding breath) and will either include a list or have a download for one.
