I have made a army now and after getting bored of fighting my brother and getting in arguements with him about rules i want to try to play with others then just him, however i am relecutant because of my age and also worried i will screw up badly. I am 14 and have a good understanding of the rtules but i am worried i will mess up but that can be fixed by studying the rules. Another problem is me not knowing anyone, i know one guy who is in there constantly though i doesn't own the store but is an employee, but he is more of a associates then an anything else. My biggest concerns are people won't want to be around me beacuse of my age and that because i am not terrible good i will gain a reputation of loseing, i don't really know what to do. I intend to go watch for a little while next weekend when they play but i don't really know where to go from there.

Age is something people get past after a few encounters, you'll make friends fast so long as you don't act like a dick. Stick with your plan, go to watch only for a day or two, get to know names and armies, then go for gaming and things will come together rather quickly, worked pretty well for me.

Age is not much of a problem as long as you are polite, well behaved, and otherwise socially capable.

Find out what the usual 40K night is and go for a few weeks, watching games and have light conversation with the rest of the guys there. Don't talk to those playing the games unless they invite you to ask questions(there is very little that is more annoying that being asked why you are doing something by a spectator midgame). After a couple of nights, ask somebody to run a game with you and see where it takes you!

Behavior wise, your best bet is to try and be a grown up. Stay calm/quiet, having conversations with people who invite you to talk with them and generally being polite. Being young at a game store isn't a problem, just don't play into the stereotype older games give you as "little kids" ad you will do fine.

Gameplay wise, don't worry about your reputation. I am a bad player but never have a problem throwing together a game with my friends. Go to have fun, not to win.

You'll get treated as old as you act. Be open to ideas and play more games - it's the only way you'll get better both skill-wise and knowledge-wise.

Most people are indifferent to age. Skill can relate to age, but in terms of their behavior to you it shouldn't be a problem. Hell, even me as the little schizo ADHD kid or whatever at the age of 10 got along.
Just don't act like an irritable bugger.

Most local stores like new blood. Go in being polite and eager to learn and they will welcome you. Believe me, the local store will want more players. More people = more armies and variety, always a good thing.

When I was a sprout, I also got into gaming, worried that I would be annoying to all the cool adults around me. Mostly, I just stuck to the same rules I had learned in pre-school. Couple of tips that helped me avoid a burking:

Ask before asking. I always made sure that someone was willing to answer my questions before asking them. "Hey, do you mind if I ask you a question?" helps a lot. If someone is busy, they will usually ask you to hang on for a second, or direct you to someone more willing to play teacher.

Look, don't touch.

If you must touch, ask before handling other peoples' toys.

Inside voice.

Calm the hell down. The only problem I usually have with younger players is their tendency towards hyperactivity. Chill out.

If you're worried about forgetting a rule?

Bring your Codex with you. Refer to it/double-check it as needed.

Also, if a dispute arises during a game, you have the source right there on hand, rather than two parties stating what they "remember" the book saying.

Other than that? Pretty much what everyone else said. Be Fonzie. Fonzie is cool.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn't even bother going for a talk only day. Just bring your stuff and if you see someone else with stuff ask them if they want to play a game. That's really all there is to it.

If your army is painted or wysiwyg or both then you'll have no issue with anyone there.

In the battlefield

The more time you waste thinking about all of this nonsense, is the time you could have spent in motion!!!

There is no time to be lost! ONWARD!!! TO VICTORY!!!! TAKE THAT STORE BY STORM!!! TRAMPLE OVER THEIR ARMIES!!! CRUSH THEM!!! DESTROY EVERY BIT OF HOPE THEY HAD OF BECOMING A GOOD PLAYER!!!!! GRIND THEIR HOPE TO DUST!!!!

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.
