Here's my second attempt - and first that I think is any good - at a 1500 point Blood Angels list. I only just picked up the codex, in preparation for the $225 worth of partly base-painted and assembled Blood Angels that I was lucky enough to pick up for $175 . What I like best about the Blood Angels is their speed and ferocity in the assault, so this list is all about delivering Boot to Face as quickly as possible, using deep strike, outflanking, jump packs, and fast-as-all-hell rhinos.

HQ

The Sanguinor - 275 pts

Elites

Sanguinary Guard w/Death Masks - 225 pts

Furioso Dreadnought w/Magna-Grapple, Mounted in a Drop Pod - 175 pts

Troops

10-Man Assault Squad w/Bolt Pistols, Sergeant w/Power Fist - 215 pts

Well, what do you think?

I think the Sanguinor is a bit expensive for a 1500 pt army, especially given he's not an IC and can't hide in units.
The Guard--I do not think Death Masks are worth their points, I would personally give them a chapter banner over that if you're going to give them anything at all.
The Furioso-- I would most definitely give him extra armor

I would add meltaguns to the assault squads, and I'd drop the DC since they won't accomplish much as just a 5 man unit in a rhino-- just a point sink. I'd add two sanguinary priests or a 6 man assault squad in a razorback instead (I'd prefer the priests). If you want to keep the DC, I'd drop the Furioso for a DC dread (since it will save you points on the extra armor).

I'm not a fan of the Furioso, especially alone in a Drop Pod. Meltaguns are simply too common at the moment to expect him to survive a round of shooting, so all you're likely to get out of him is a single Meltagun shot.

I agree about the Death Company too. They can't charge out of the Rhino unless it hasn't moved. If you really want to use them, play at higher points where you can take multiple Stormravens and put them in one.

Finally, it's best to either play a mech list or a Jump Infantry list, not a mix. I'd drop the Baals for another Assault Squad.

If you make all the cuts I'm suggesting, you should do several things with the points. First, you need at least two Chalices in the list, either from Priests with Jump Packs or Honor Guards. If you go the HG route, give them JPs and four of the same special weapon. Second, you need 3 Assault Squads, each with 2 special weapons and a Power Fist or Power Weapon/Lightning Claw if the squad has Flamers. I'd go with 2 dual Melta/PF squads and 1 dual Flamer/LC squad. Finally, you can either add Vanguard Veterans or 4x Missile Launcher Devastators. Vanguards should be cheap, I like just giving them JPs and upgrading the Sarge to a Power Fist. Don't expect them to live long, but use them to punch out vehicles and tie up stuff like Long Fangs.

Ok, so, here's a revised version of my list. I took a lot of deathholydeath's advice when it came to exchanging neat but expensive units for more cheaper units. I know the Space Marines in general are an elite force who are usually outnumbered by other factions, but I also know that I'll get my butt kicked if I'm too outnumbered. I also attacked the anti-tank problem by adding a lot more melta. Another upside is that without the death company and rhino, my entire list can be airdropped using Descent of Angels. I'm not sure how often I'll keep everything in reserve and Deep Strike my entire army on turn two, but it's neat to have that option.

My only concerns are this: without a death company, a furioso dreadnought, and a Sanguinor am I still doing enough to make this a distinctively Blood Angels list? I really don't want to finish painting this list, use it, and end up feeling like I'm playing vanilla marines painted red.

Anyway, here's the list: questions and comments are welcome. Still 1500 points.

If you only have the assault cannons on the Baal's then just ditch em for 2 cheap squads of assault marines. Also get rid of the Dreads as well and get sanguinary guards or something.

Given that you are set on a hybrid list, the weakness I see is the Dreads in Drop Pods. It's generally accepted that you want an odd number of Drop Pods in a list so a higher percentage of the list shows up on the first turn. That said, I wouldn't put the Dreads in Pods anyway. You only have 4 vehicles, so putting two of them in Melta range ASAP is probably a bad idea. If you cut the Pods, you could give each Dread dual TL-Autocannons, which will help you open transports for your infantry.

Ok, you convinced me.

Or, rather, experience did. I just won a game against Orks, and at the end, my opponent said "you should drop the Baals; they didn't really add much." I have to agree. It was nice to get a different kind of durability and firepower into my list, but they just aren't tough enough to justify not dropping with the rest of the army and having less flexibility when it comes to placement.

I'm dropping the Baals and putting the points into the Sanguinor and power weapons for the priests (my experiences were based on a slightly different list than the one you see above).
