I've set up a project to see if there's any interest in this idea.

Creating terrain layout designs and letting people rate them. Creating a databank of 'balanced' layouts for terrain, for 40k and other systems in time. You can download scaled icons for terrain and submit your own layouts for ratings by others. or use the icons to create campaigns and scenarios.

Although I would probably use it for idea seeding in my friendly games. It could be very very useful for FLGS tournies though.

Cool idea. I'd strongly suggest (When you have the available time/money/expertise) to have a simple in-browser flash or Java version, since it might turn off some people to download a program from a stranger

I'd just caution you a bit on naming the icons (Tyranids or Chaos Space Marines == Bad. Bug Aliens or Evil Space Soldiers ==Better), to avoid an infamous GW C&D letter.

Also, for people wanting to do their own battle reports, I'd suggest a sprite pack (Dunno if this will be/is included or not) for indications of casualties, Fall Back, Turboboost, Smoke Grenades, some of the persistent psychic powers, blast templates, etc. If you're already doing this, please ignore this

Other than that, it looks amazing, and I can't wait to see more TTLs!

Blech. While a cool idea, I rather despise the concept of a 'balanced map'. If I wanted to play on a mirrored battlefield, I'd play an RTS.

Okay, well, they don't all have to be symmetrical. BALANCED DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN SYMMETRICAL Make some asymmetrical balanced maps!!!!

@chaos0xomega: While unbalanced maps are fun, they're only fun if you tailor the scenario and/or army lists appropriately. Would you like to play a game in which there's an open field, and a single cluster of Fortifications on the opponent table edge, and they're playing Tau/IG? It'd be fun if you had +X points to counteract the disadvantadge of location and terrain, but without that, I'd predict an unfun (For you at least) curb-stomp battle.

Plus, balanced doesn't mean symmetrical either. If one half of the map has high vantage points (hills, ruins, etc) and the other half has lots of area terrain, this could be balanced as one player would have better firing positions and fire lanes, while the other player has better cover saves to counteract the increased shooting. Look at some of the fun maps on DOW or WC3; While most of the maps are mirrored, some of them are not, and they're just as fun as the mirrored maps.

I think the OP/site is trying to encourage "Balanced for gameplay" maps, not balanced==symmetrical or balanced==bland maps.

Yeah good point. Hmm building a flash program like that is leagues over my head, i'll look into it tho. might be simpler than i think.

i'm going to stick to CSM, SM Terms, ELD AVGs, NID CARN, etc for names so hopefully that will keep lawyers happy. Action pack is a good idea too. I was doing a couple of these things but a whole pack to cover it all might be a better solution for B Reps.

what to do first is a problem,

What would you think people would want frist? game tiles for other games or army icons for battle reps? or a mock campaign to show that?

I personally would vote for army icons for 40K, and my personal opinion of the general order of stuff to release (in my view based on percieved player base) would be:
WH40K>WM/H>WHFB>Infinity>Necromunda/Mordheim>Other (Dust, AT-43, BFG, etc.)

The only issue I see is that you need a few maps that aren't symmetrical.
