I am testing out the Dark Tone from Army Painter. I've dipped some white models in and over an hour later it just doesn't look like much shading. I shook them a couple times to get the excess off but not much came off and it was only a couple of shakes so I don't think that is the cause of my mild concern.

Am I doing it wrong by using Dark Tone, should I be using the Medium(Strong)?

Does it just take a long time for the effects to show?

Any experiences with dipping in these products would be very much appreciated. Also am I wasting money by dipping in these $30 cans? Is there something that is cheaper and does the same job?

Are you saying that there is no shading occuring?

If that is the case, take a stirring stick or something and physically stir the can a bit. The pigment of these items tends to settle at the bottom and it can get quite thick and goopy, so just shaking my not agitate it enough.

Give it a stir, and try again, it should shade instantly.

I would second the suggestion to stir them very well. I've not heard of results like yours before though. There should be some obvious shading.

Have you tried brushing the dip on and then using a brush to remove only as much as you want off? I use a brush for application.

As to a cheaper product. If you have Dark Tone it's the appropriate color for white and it should be fine. If you want a substitution in the future, Minwax Polyshades is what people used for dip before AP came out. I've only used Minwax, so I can't compare it to AP, but I've had good results and it's only 4-8 bucks for the same size can. Here's the nearest equivalent shades of Polyshades to AP Quickshade.

Pecan for Soft Tone
Antique Walnut for Strong tone
Tudor (I can only find this at Ace Hardware) for Dark Tone.
