Subject: droppodded venerable dread loadout in vanilla SM list?

Hi,
Im tempted to include a venerable dread in my vanilla SM master of forge dread list. Delivery for said venerable will be a drop pod.
Im thinking of keeping the DCCW to utilize str10 and WS 5, so im getting only 1 shooty arm. Which should it be?
-twinlinked las seems like partial waste with BS5, and is only 1 shot anyway
-ac also waste as twinlinked, and weak
-assault cannon: too weak? can in theory touch even av14/heavy inf, good amount of shots, not too expensive
-plasma: a small blast, not too good utility forBS5, but versatile, could nail heavy inf nicely
-mm: good utility for BS5, comes with std price, one shot only, but likely kills any inf and best against heavy armor
-missile: versatile, but long range wasted and small blast not too impressive
what else, and how?
Rest of the army is likely to be 3 rifleman, 20-30 scouts, 2-4 landspeeders with missiles, ironclad dread and possibly one std dread also podding in. Could have scout bikers too.
Aim is to have all comers list, but using ven dread is what im pondering right now.
TIA,
Timo

If you drop-pod, you can get in close straight away.
So, look for short ranged, hard hitting kit. Like a MM.

i'm a fan of las cannons but then again its pretty wasted on a venerable with the BS5
that said most things are twin linked. do you plan on using your dred as mostly close combat? if so then heavy flamer.
if you want shooty with ability to do somethign if gets assaulted then plasma cannon imo the added BS will let you negat the scatter dice a little better.. in my experience as MEQ and as orks playing against MEG .. venerables don't seem worth the points unless its against monstrous creatuers or other walkers

Can Vens take 2 CCW? Get a flamer on both arms, and drop it into hordes.

I would try to get 3 drop pods so you can drop both the ironclad and venerable in at the same time. I would have one with flamers and one melta for a general allcomers list.

I would personally go for MM or Assault Cannon. Since you are podding in, the range issue goes away. And given the BS 5, you are definitely going to hit whatever you shoot at. A lot of people don't like the Assault Cannon after it got 'nerfed' but its still a good weapon. Not only does it have a huge volume of fire, it also Rends. So if the dice god smiles upon you that game, Assault Cannon is a good choice along with MM. Other than that, Plasma can be worth it. However you will be sorta wasting that good BS of 5 although it means that your scatter will hardly go off target.

Why buy expensive 40k at retail price?

See the link above and get decent 40k armies for a decent price.

I regularly run a Vene. Dread with MM/HF in a Drop Pod. The downside to both the MM and the HF are usually their short range. The Drop Pod alleviates those concerns nicely and I especially like the HF for flushing units out of cover that would normally take an excessive amount of fire to move. It's a fairly cheap combo, since the MM isn't any extra and the HF is cheap. Throw in some extra armor if you want, and your dread can assault things if he gets stunned and doesn't want to eat any more fire for a few turns.

I'd run the assault cannon. Nothing like four rending shots tearing into enemy troops, and the BS of 5 will ensure most shots hit.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space. |
