Trying to get a new league started at my FLGS - anyone have a great league format they want to share?

We have done leagues in the past like this: fixed point value (1750)- your list can change (but not your faction/army). We set up matches between the participants - one game every 2 weeks - usually about 4-5 rounds then the best records go into a 4 player tournament. We don't have a fixed 'league night'. We did see quite a bit of list 'tailoring' but game setups and formats were rolled randomly each time. We also had people wandering off before it was done and not scheduling their final matches. One of my opponents even sold his army (here on Dakka) the week before our match.

Anyone been in a great league? - tell me how you ran it.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

I was in a league where everyone had to play everyone 3 times using the 3 different deployment types and 3 different missions.

the first game was randomly determined as normal. then the 2nd game was randomly determined with the unplayed types. 3rd game was whatever hadn't been played yet.

the only restriction was you had to use the same army.

you could have everyone use the same list for the entire league. that would be interesting.

That might be an easy way to do it. I do know that players in the past leagues liked to change up their list - afraid they'd try something that didn't work, and they'd be stuck with it for weeks - so one fixed list prob will not fly.

In fact we are trying to make it more UNlike a tournament.

I might look into having a series of mission/scenarios (like a cityfight - kill the leader - etc) maybe announce the new mission every two weeks so we get to play something different - but no one rolls 'annihilation' every week...

I can go over what we do at my weekly league cycle, which has gone one for the past few months with great success.

It's a weekly deal, and has a fixed point value (2000, though it used to be 1850). Each week, everyone who shows up draws a card from a plain deck of cards, which has two of each value for the number of games, and the people who draw the same number play each other. Deployment and mission are rolled randomly right before matches are drawn. Anyone can change their army and list from week to week, but must hand in their official list before matches are drawn to prevent list tailoring.

As for scoring, we use a modified form of the chess system. Each player starts out at 500 points on the first night of the league. For the life of me, I can't describe how it works, but essentially players go up in points based on how badly they beat their opponent, and at what point level their opponent was compared to them. The further apart the players got, the higher ranked player needed a bigger victory to earn points (and even a large victory vs. a lower opponent earns less points than a smaller victory to someone at equal or above points).

I have no idea how, exactly, it works though. The guy who runs the league has a giant chart for determining victory levels and points changes.

Oh, and though we lost it due to the owner not having time, we actually used to have all kinds of custom missions for each week. The owner came up with them and tweaked them for balance, and we had all kinds of fun playing them. Sadly he had things come up, and we went back to normal missions/deployments, but it was fun for a while.

I am currently running an Escalation League at The Game Haven in Fairborn Ohio. Here's the text from the info packet:

Spoiler:
Warhammer 40k Escalation League
What is an Escalation League?
An Escalation League is a league where you and several opponents play games of Warhammer 40k for Battle Points over a period of 10 weeks. With the size or each player’s army growing each round by 250 points. The player with the highest amount of Battle Points at the end of the Escalation League wins.
What do you win?

1st Place = $30 Store Credit
2nd Place = $20 Store Credit
3rd Place = $10 Store Credit

Best Painted Army = $10 Store Credit
What does it cost to participate?
$10 per person
Rules
o Each person who wishes to play in the league must sign up by 5/30/2011 at 6pm.
o There is a minimum of Eight (8) players in the league.
o Each person will start out with a legal 500 point army. Which are at least 1 HQ and 2 Troop choices up to 500 points.
o You will have a two week period to play three games against a fellow league participant.
o All games must be played at the Game Haven, and both players must sign off on their Results sheet for it to be a valid game. Results must be turned in to Game Haven by Sunday end of business before the next round.
o Scenarios will be posted at the Game Haven for everyone’s convenience. The Scenarios will also be available to take home as well. It is up to you and your opponent to be playing the correct mission for the correct round.
o All Armies must be WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) meaning that if you pay points for an upgrade for a model it should be represented somewhere on the model.
o Models need to be painted to a three color minimum by the end of the League to be eligible for the Best Painted Army Prize.
o Every two weeks the points cap will increase by 250 points. Remember models at the Game Haven are 20% off.
