Subject: Ig special weps squad question
|
 |
Drop Trooper with Demo Charge
|
Today i had a couple games and decided that i'd change my infantry platoon around to suit al'rahems outflanking (plus Officer of the astro ordnance) and i took out my 3 lasannon hvy wep for a special weps team.
Here is where my problem occurs, i said i'd have 6 flamers in for a max of 65 pts of the squad and he said that i'd most likely only be able have 3 of the flamers. i raised the question of how the spec. weps say "3 of the guardsman must choose one of the following" and the vets say "up to a maximum of 3 can choose one of the following"
My question is: Can i have 6 flamers because it doesnt mention a wep cap? or am i stuck with 3 lasguns. just a little chunk which is in the dark at the moment.
Thanks for any replies

Only the three of the Guardsmen have the option to take special weapons so the rest of the Special weapon squad can only have lasguns

Its cheap special weapons that can also score and deploy at the same time as the rest of the platoon, so don't dismiss them simply because they can't load up with special weapons.

It's not because i can't have 6 flamers, its because there is now 3 guys who can do gak all and shouldn't even be there. If its a objectives game i will but if its killpoints, just a couple boltgun shots could just outright destroy them or just outright anything.
I'll keep 'em on a sticky note in my troops section but i dont wanna be just giving the points away.

They're extra wounds for the flamers, just like the Sarge and 7 other guys in an Infantry squad are extra wounds for the Heavy Weapons team.

Except if these guys take fire, they either die horribly, or run away, unable to rally, so i can see Yarrick's reluctance to take them. I use them myself and depending on load out, can give them certain roles. Mostly i use them as an anti-drop pod measure armed with meltaguns, keeping them close to their parent platoon, attached Lord Commissar and the CCS for LD 10 orders, and the whole section forms my main line. The end result is my opponents are reluctant to pod near the firebase and armored elements, this also frees my vets to hunt Land-raiders and the like. Sniper teams are nice and cheap, although not nearly as deadly as they could be, but on the other hand that is a blessing as they'll mostly be ignored and if not, where hardly a drop in the bucket as far as points go. i place them far away from my firebase and sometimes they'll get lucky and pin something, but for the most part they'll just pick away at things threatening my main force. i avoid Plasma on units without medics as its irritating to watch the three important members implode when you need them the most, leaving you with three terrified lasgunners booking it for the table edge, but if they manage to survive marine players will tread softly around them. Grenade launchers can be fun, but the weapons are plentiful enough in my infantry squads so i've had little cause to field dedicated units of them. Flamers are excellent against hordes as you'd expect, but their main task is to serve as a speedbump that the enemy would have to roll extremely poorly to avoid butchering in a single phase, leaving themselves open to dakka in your next turn. a similar task is given to the PCS.

Three vets may have special weapons but you could also have two, one or none.
In a special weapon squad three of the six guys must have special weapons. You may not have four special weapons or two - always three.

I run my platoon command squads with 3-4 flamers; they sit behind the front line, and if that gets assaulted then the command squad just walks forward and toasts the (invariably bunched-up) enemy squads. They easily get their points back every time (when they get the chance), and are rarely a top priority target in the middle of a battle. Special weapon squads can easily fill the same role, with an added demo charge to boot.

I also have 3 flamers and a medi in my pcs with alrahem, so i'll likely bunch them together use "like the wind!" on an infantry squad if possible, shoot and move in a circle around them for cover and hopefully spread to avoide blasts myself.
Also another question, does an infantry platoon have to roll reserve for every squad there, or just one for itself?

I've always been in awe that they can take 3 demo charges... One day I'll try that.

You roll for the entire platoon i think, they have to arrive at the same time, but don't have to be together if my memory serves.

Normally, you'd roll for all the squads separately as they're different units even though they're a single FoC choice.
However, IG have a special rule - P96

Thanks for that. I've never noticed that bit before, and its a real shame that i was made to roll seperately for each unit because i didnt :/
