apparently a guy who was studying abroad came back to nepal and found his girlfriend had pictures of herself with another guy on her phone. so he took her to the jungle and shot her.

now, we know that the man is a complete B*****d, but...they rioted in the streets (they do at least once a week, for something or other) because they want him to be hung but there is no capital punishment here.

WTF? a man kills a person and you wreck someone else's bike? And throw rocks at cars on the road? Its like somebody read this in the newspaper while on the metro and slugged the man next to him.

And it is sadly ironic, I mean how many times has a guy 'shot his baby down' in a song? Cliche right? yeah, the jerk is an overreactive feth, but why scream and riot because you want him to hang?

they rioted just two months ago for no capital punishment even though none existed as well.

they even riot to get people to make ludicrous disicions, like: we want you to make our buffalo give more milk (there was a riot about this at one point, but keep in mind, people in this culture wont sleep near rivers or the ghosts of the drowned folks will come up, or so they say)

the government is dysfunctional enough already.

what do you think about this?

Trashing and rioting help nothing, but, people are too stupid to realize that.

yeah, that's the point. but the government here is so unstable, that they actually do sometimes give in to riots. it was less like this in the states.

I really don't know what to say, of course, nepal is an unstable government, all I can say really is that you should continue to do the right thing and live your life.

Honestly, it seems that violence is a simple solution to many, therefore, it's justified to riot since they can't think of any other way to protest, like nonviolent resistance, civil protests, group rallies, petitions and the sort.

We just came out of a civil war here, so things are a bit tumultus, they don't even need to protest this, all they need to say is 'hang him'

Public demonstrations are a great and time-honored way of communicating to the government and to other citizens. But violence, looting and burning are just stupid expressions of impotent rage and ignorange. It's always frustrating.

Unfortunately though, they may be great and time honored, they are also very rarely effective, and easy for governments to ignore. Fact is, at the end of the day, taking to the streets of the capital and attacking government buildings, and refusing to pay tax are about the only ways of ever getting significant change enacted. Petitions and standing outside for a day with signs are all very well and good, but I've yet to hear of a local council seeing a 5,000 strong petition and saying, 'Wow! We've completely changed our minds! Let's not let Tesco's open a store there/local developers bulldoze the local playing fields for flats/lower taxes/give back weekly bin rounds, etc'.

100% agree, it might be dumb, and inexcusable behavior, but its the only way to be taken seriously sadly.....

Did they attack a lot of buildings and throw a lot of rocks at cops in Egypt recently? How about Ghandi? MLK Jr.?

There's a middle ground between violence and ineffective protesting. It's a difficult and sometimes dangerous road, and often winds up with being arrested or assaulted even though you're not being violent. But it can work.

Not always. Sometimes they have a central goal, and sometimes that goal is achieved.
