Warhammer 40,000 uses what we call ‘true line of sight’ for shooting attacks. This means that you take the positions of models and terrain at face value, and simply look to see if your warriors have a view to their targets. This is different to other, more abstract systems where terrain is assigned a height value and you have to calculate what warriors can see. We have chosen true line of sight because it makes the game feel much more cinematic and ‘real’. There’s nothing quite like getting a ‘model’s eye view’ to bring the game to life. Of course, this method does mean that occasionally there are border-line cases when it is quite hard to decide if a model can see a target or not, but sporting players will always be generous and give their opponent the benefit of the doubt.

Does this mean if my unit can see over another unit the unit being looked over does not count as cover for the enemy unit? but would count for cover for me?

If the intervening unit partially blocks LOS, then they would provide cover.

If not, then no.

If orks are standing right behing gretchin they can easily look over them, so the gretchin would not provide cover to the enemy.

However, when looking at the orks, the gretchin would block LoS to the orks, so the would provide cover to the orks.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

This can often happen; it depends on the exact positions and heights of the models involved. Tau Crisis suits often can do this with screening squads of Kroot too.

Maybe its me, but i think i have read that friendly models are assumed to move out of the way so the people behind them can fire, or am i thinking about blocking line of sight completely, sorry for not having the rule book on me, but it seems like the people in front would move so the people behind can freely, maybe this was a different edition. So the unit being fired at wouldn't get cover from the friendly unit standing in front, but the friendly unit would give cover to the unit behind. Like i said i may be wrong but swear i have read this.

You're thinking of a unit firing through itself most likely.
