Hi Guys and Gals!
So I finally decided to try and tackle that damned Ork AOBR army that's been sitting on my shelf. I wanted to see if using my airbrush would help along with the speed as I wasnt looking forward to painting 20 of these guys. I tried using two shades of brown for the khakis and was going for a speed painting approach. Here's the first test model, using mainly base colors and washes after the AB and limiting the amount of highlighting to just the skin and a few other attention spots. My goal was a playable standard with the minimum amount of time investment. I think it came out good( especially the blood on the axe). I like a dark Ork skin too. You can see the rest of the horde in the background waiting there turns! I posted the steps I took on my blog (click signature to see). I didn't get an accurate time scale since I took my time with nailing the steps down.
Opinions and CC welcomed...

I like the olive skin tone. Makes it look more realistic and less animated. Also nice to see more people using airbrushes these days. I also love the deep red used on the axe. Care to share how you did that and the skin? Automatically Appended Next Post: p.s. drill them barrels!

Thanks, yes gonna drill the barrels after they are all done. Break out the old Dremel and zip zip!
I used Reaper Red Ink for the Blood. After I dullcoted it, I touched it with some gloss varnish> I might add more , maybe a little splattered across the face or maybe some gore chunks on the blade( hehe)
For the Skin I used Vallejo Heavy Grey. I don't know why but the Heavy Grey and Heavy khaki colors of that line are actually shades of green ( the Heavy Colors are the Vallejo versions of Foundations). It took to the Devlan mud wash very nicely. And I have to admit as much as I dislike GW products, its damn hard to get away from the washes, and I make my own with Les's recipe. But the end results are hard to argue with.
Plus i really love how the pants came out with the two tone airbrushing. It looks like a rough and tumble pair of pants.
If there is more of an interest I might be persuaded to make up a quick tutorial to show the steps I've taken.

Hey heavy ! you got nice ork there , if your looking for cc then the only one i can give you is that there is no strong highlight so it makes the model look the same color all over it makes it look more realistic but less pleasing to look at , but it is very good, keep up the good work

The results are quite good, taken at face value. When you consider that this is a speed painting method, they're downright fantastic.
If you can find the time, a tutorial would be great. Wouldn't really help me right now, since I can't afford an airbrush, yet, but another tutorial can never hurt (especially something along these lines, what with the rather rapid rise of the airbrush as a mini-painting tool amongst wargamers, recently).

Thanks for the cc, o0shotty0o. Much appreciated. I'm avoiding strong highlighting for two reasons, I don't feel like strong highlights will look good for the look I'm going for which is a dirty realism and because I'm trying to minimize the amount of time to get them to a playable state. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with strong highlights but I don't want to overdo it. I'm really not a fan of the "Eavy Metal" Style of overdone edge highlights anyway. Who knows I may change my mind next week and highlight the crap out of them. But for now this is just right.
I managed to polish off a few more, but its not as speedy as I had hoped =(. Gettin there though. i tried varying the shades of green I used for the skins for some variety but its the blood effect thats the most fun to do. And I drilled out the barrels but my aim was alittle off...
That chainsaw looks like it needs a good dousing with Windex...
I think his skin has come out the best so far...
This guy needs alittle more touchup on his skin I admit.

Nice work. My first Ork, well, he was good enough to be stripped and repainted, I can tell you that.

well I managed to get the entire 20 orks finished and polished off the Nobs too ( ) I decided to get alittle more detailed with the skintones and tried to use washes to do alittle wet blending with varied results, but I think it makes them Pop alittle more with more detailed skin. I'm working on the Warboss now and tried to do alittle hairspray paint chip weathering on the claw but I'm not sure how happy I am with it. Will post when he's further on.
Here's 4 out of 5 Nobs( yes they all agree that Crest fights cavities)

Those are really good. The skin tones look more natural, instead of cartoony.
About how long is is taking you, per Ork, on average?
