Like the title says, do any of you have any good space flight simulators to recommend? I'm not talking like, full on real-to-life simulators with all the switches and "boring" parts such as some current flight sims have. I'm talking about something akin to Ace Combat or Hawx. If any of you have played the space fighter mission in Halo Reach, something more along the lines of that.

I have no Idea why this concept hasn't been pursued further in the games industry, because the scale of a game of this type is inspiring. The issue of rendering ground details like mountains, cities, flora etc. that current flight sims have problems with would be negated, as the game would take place in space, and would let developers increase the detail of the various fighter craft in the game. It would also allow developers to create immersive celestial backdrops, such as those seen in EVE.
And the notion of the ground, and the combat ceiling would also be removed, bringing an extra tactical element to gameplay. Imagine dog-fighting through asteroid belts?

Ill stop their, as I could go on all day. In summary, does a game like this exist? I can't seem to find anything

none of which compete with todays graphics.

Edit:
X3: The Reunion looks actually looks like the ticket, at the moment.

I'm kinda saddened by the fact that the genre has really only seen one release in the past couple years (x3)

When I was younger and my dads computer could barely support itself, me and my brother waited until the screensaver came on, and pretended we were in space.

Its an option if your computer can't play actual games.
