I was wondering...
Would 1500 points of Guardsmen (about 300) be a viable strategy or purely for the lolz?
It would be the funniest thing if they won against an army like GK. xD

I'd probably be pretty fun, but not competitive. If you want ~300 guardsmen, you won't have the points necessary to upgrade them to have useful weapons.
A plain guardsmen, while dirt cheap, only has his krak grenade to try and defeat armor, so anything with rear armor 13 or higher is going to be invulnerable.
The same goes for anything with toughness 7 or higher, ((wraith lord)) Since your S3 guns won't be able to do anything even on a lucky shot.
Other then that it'd probably be a pretty fun game. You'll struggle to kill anything tough, and he'll struggle to put a dent in your wall of bodies.
For a more competitive list, drop some squads and add in melta guns and bombs to create cheap dangerous 65pt squads. Investing in Straken might be a good idea too, nothing says fun like 200 furious charging guardsmen.

Could just be composed of mulitple power blobs as well, will struggle against some lists but get some surprising wins at the same time.

Personally at 1500 pts I would drop about 100 guardsmen, use the points to buy meltabombs on the sgts and missile launcher teams/meltaguns, etc.

Infintary spam? I like it.id use creed and outflank a platoon on one side, al'Raheem a platoon on the other.
Harker for vet infil( main threat, add anti tank and mc)
Heck, whats his face for SITNW just to be a dick and have 100 conscripts continuosly coming on and off.
And more troops w/ left over pts.
Start the bored, 1 ccs, 1 vet squad. and possible small platoon. Outflank turn 2 and or 3, total 0f 400+ guardsmen. i diddnt add pts, this prolly goes past 3k but still would be pretty boss putting 200 guys on a table edge. and 200 on the other. Kindof overwhelming

If you really want to spam, you could also throw in the whats-his-name Russian guy who lets you recycle conscripts. It'd suck for KP missions, but being able to swarm them even more with an infinite tide of conscripts (To act as human shields for your better-equiped tsunami of bodies in the rear) and lock dangerous enemies in CC.

Imagine the feeling when you position your tanks, engines idling, landing gear deployed for a low profile, with firing solutions along a key bottleneck. Then some fether lands a dreadnought behind them in a giant heat shielded coke can.

Uh yeah if you never want to be allowed to play again.. The higher point limit of apoc the lower the usefulness of basic troops
thats 50k points of total junk who who would even have that .. I got over 40k of imperial models but thats insane in its own right

Just whipped up an idea army for you:
HQ: Vanilla Company Command Squad (50pts)
Troop #1: Platoon Command Squad W/ Commander Chenkov, 2 vanilla Infantry Squads, a 50-strong Conscript Squad with SITNW (455 pts)
Troop #2: Platoon Command Squad W/ Commander Al'Rahem, 5 vanilla Infantry Squads, a 50-strong Conscript Squad with SITNW (625 pts)
Troop #3: Platoon Command Squad, 3 vanilla Infantry Squads, a 50-strong Conscript Squad with SITNW (455 pts)
Troop #4: Platoon Command Squad, 2 vanilla Infantry Squads, a 50-strong Conscript Squad with SITNW (455 pts)
...with 10 pts left over to play with in a 2K point army.
This gives you 345 models on the table, 105 of which can outflank thanks to Al'Rahem. True, you won't be breaking any armor with this list, and you'll have issues with morale and the like, but still, 345 models with nearly a third of them outflanking...

I got about 100 guardsmen models and already think it is borderline insane considering the cost to buy them and the time to assemble and paint. 300 is in the realm of absurd.
The Russian guy's name is Chenkov. A potential problem with that build is that the recycled guys have to walk in from the edge, so it will be a couple of turns before they reach the front lines. So, you probably won't be able to recycle any particular unit more than 1-2 times in a normal game. Of course, you can buy some chimeras and use them as WW1 trucks to shuttle the conscripts to the Somme, but that will become expensive pretty quickly. Still, it may be fun to try.
Competitive? I don't see it. One special weapon per 10 guys is a bit harsh and not a reliable AT.
The conscript-heavy list should be called the Russian list. The vet build with chimeras should be the Panzergrenadier list.

Quick Question: Chenkov's ability says they walk on from his board edge, but Al'Rahem says that any units in his platoon always outflank. Which unit text takes precedence if you outflank some conscripts with that ability?

IIRC both Chenkov and Al'Rahem are upgrades for the junior officer leading the platoon. As such, you cannot take both - it is either one or the other - because they both upgrade and replace the same model. My understanding is that you can buy the "send in the next wave" ability only for the conscripts in Chenkov's platoon, so you cannot buy it for Al'Rahem's squads. So, there is no contradiction or cross-over.
But, if I am wrong and you can mix them, that will be pretty ridiculous and fun as well.

Al'Rahem is only units from his platoon, and they must outflank. Chenkov is any units of Conscripts in your army... I've already built a list I want to try at my flgs for this exact abuse of the rules, with lots of autocannon Heavy Weapon teams outflanking to casue shenanigans as well...

youre better off just buying more conscripts than wasting points with chenkovs ability.. or just not buying conscripts in general as theyre 1pt less for a lot of negatives. If youre gonna spam guardsmen then do so.. Make sure you got a lord commissar!

A cheap way to get a lot of guardsmen is to buy ww1 miniatures instead of the gw ones. They'll have a 40k ish look similar to the Death Korps of Kreig. They're much cheaper than the gw ones and are all pewter. I have an army of early war French and I use them as an infantry blob army. Renegade miniatures has a good range of figures at a good price, which is where I got mine. Old glory miniatures also has a good range, but only has late war minis. It'll still be expensive, but more like $30ish for 24 guys from renegade, or $16 for ten at old glory instead of $25 for only ten from gw.

Crimson Fists 2,000 pts

60 man power blobs and a comissar... 12 inches from straken! 7 power weapons in a massive unit. You could cover so much of the table with guardsmen they couldnt deepstrike anywhere. Completely cover a tank with men. I'd love to see which armies, would get bum rushed by a guard horde.
Another fun thing about guard spam would be FRFSRF. It would be off the hook!

Depends what your game size is. 2500pnt game? Sure! Not only would it be fun, it would be quite effective actually unless you are up against a complete mech list. Use your Orders well and you'll find yourself that evening mighty Terminators will fall to hundreds of flashlights. Also, if you put on some cheap upgrades on each squad, your army will be able to deal with just about anything. Not mention that it will take forever to kill off 300 Guardsmen.
|
Why buy expensive 40k at retail price?

See the link above and get decent 40k armies for a decent price.

Funny, this is the flavor of IG I have played for years, and I have had great success with it. It is one of the most competitive, unknown IG builds, IMHO. The beauty of the list is the fact that you will outnumber EVERYONE [yes, even Nids] at 2k. Also, all of those tasty XV88, heavy destroyers and/or MGs your opponent brought are just going to REALLY fry 1 5-point guardsman a turn. The best part is when you set up and your opponent realizes there is just no way he can ever kill all of that.
I run 5 platoonsx4 squads. The squads have 2 HB and 2 ML. The PCS come with AC and are really only there for FRFSRF. Throw in a CCS and a few LC-toting HWS who get the most benefit out of bring down the big ones, and you have the IG all-infantry gun line. ST or a PBS is just icing on the cake.
The only trouble I ever had was against a Necron player who brought his Mono-brick and dropped it into the middle of the line. I had to shove 80+ guardsmen out of the way, and then the thing wouldn't die. Luckily he soon phased out.
Against armies that need to DS, or Rhino-rush me...forget it. The transports die to the dozens of heavy weapons halfway there, and then the infantry die to HB and FRFSRF. It hasn't lost to an army yet, but then again I haven't played it against SOB or other IG.
Of course the build also gives him about 30 KPs to claim, so you'll have to table him/her. Don't worry about combining squads or Commissars... let a squad here or there run away/get slaughtered in CC; the remaining hole is what the other 25 squads are for.
