Hey everyone, just got a quick question for you. I'm trying to get a quick 800-point Ork army built, just to help myself and my friend learn to play the game. I'm building all of my models from scratch because, well, I'm poor. Anyway, onto my question. The Ork codex says, "A Big Mek allows one Deff Dread to be taken as a Troops choice." My friend and I agree it sounds as though that means that 2 Big Meks in the HQ slots would allow 2 Deff Dreads in the Troops slot, fulfilling the FOC requirements. Yes, I realize that taking 2 Big Meks, 2 Deff Dreads, and 9 Killa Kans may not be the best army list, but it will be fast, cheap, and I can use all the models, even if it's just for Apoc. Thanks everyone for any replies.

On the battlefield, in that dark corner you forgot to check.

Hmm, I can see this being read either way, and the FAQ doesn't have anything to say on the matter.

I view this as being similar in spirit to dedicated transports (except that these aren't transports but actual FOC units), in that each unit you take allows the option to be taken once per unit - in other words, each Big Mek would allow one Deff Dread to be taken as Troops, so yes, what you're doing should be valid.

Realistically, if you and your opponent are agreeing that this is valid, I don't think of this as an issue at all.

(Side note: remember that vehicles don't count as scoring units unless they're explicitly specified as such, so that army is going to be very hobbled in objective-based missions by not actually being able to hold any objectives!)

I've had a few other people say this, so, for now at least, I'm going to go with it. But I would like to know for sure so I don't have an issue come up at a later date.

Yea.....about that......I'm kinda hoping I can just table him until we get our forces bulked out a bit more. I can hope, right???

Legal, but don't do this in an 800 point army though, as the dreads are not scoring. You will need at least 2 scoring units.

Check out IA:8. It has a Dread Mob army codex that is exactly what it sounds like: lots and lots of stompy coming across the field.

Dreads come in mobs of 1-3, kans in 3-5, scrap trukks aren't fast, more battle wagon variants than you can shake a stick at, and stompa rules for regular play. All in all, best book ever.
